When I first moved to the South, I made a major baby shower outfit mistake: I showed up in jeans. Back in Utah, baby showers were typically casual, so I didn’t think twice about wearing denim. But as soon as I arrived at the shower in North Carolina, I realized I had completely misjudged the dress code. Every other guest was dressed up, and I immediately felt out of place. And I’ve never worn jeans to a baby shower since.
That experience taught me an important lesson: baby shower attire can vary depending on the host, the guest of honor’s style, and even regional culture. Some showers feel like mini weddings, with guests in cocktail dresses and heels, while others are more laid-back. So how do you know what to wear? Here’s a foolproof guide to choosing the perfect baby shower guest outfit, so you can stop worrying about being underdressed or overdressed.
Here is the quick answer: A midi or maxi dress is the safest choice for a baby shower as a guest. Check the invitation first for any stated dress code. Skip white only if the mom-to-be specifically asked guests to avoid it. If you’re unsure how dressy to go, pick the more dressed-up option.

Yes, you can wear white to a baby shower as a guest. Unlike a wedding, there’s no etiquette rule that reserves white for the mom-to-be. The one exception is if the shower has a stated dress code (something like “everyone in pink for the baby girl”) or you know the mom-to-be herself is wearing white. If you’d rather err on the safer side, a solid pastel in the spring or rich jewel tone in the fall or floral midi dress always works well.

And, of course, location plays a role. In my experience, baby showers in Utah tend to be more relaxed, whereas North Carolina showers lean more formal. But no matter where you are, if you’re unsure, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

What Not to Wear to a Baby Shower
A few things worth skipping before you get dressed.
Anything bodycon, sheer, or very short. This isn’t the moment to draw attention away from the mom-to-be, and a shower crowd usually skews more conservative than a night out would.
Fabrics that don’t hold up to sitting. Structured fabric that wrinkles the second you sit down isn’t worth it to me. Save it for an event where you’re standing, and wrinkles are less of an issue.
Anything too flashy. This is the mom-to-be’s day, not yours. Save the boldest pieces in your closet for a different occasion.
Shoes you can’t stand in. Showers can be long, and you’re often standing to mingle before and after the main event. A heel you can’t stand comfortably in isn’t worth it, no matter how good it looks.
