I have quite a few foundations I love but I often like to use a good tinted moisturizer instead. At 41, my skin is genuinely in a good place, and I’d rather let it shine than hide it. Tinted moisturizer is faster, looks like skin, and it’s the easiest way to make sure I’m wearing SPF (because we all know how that goes when sunscreen is a separate step).
The truth is, I’m picky. Really picky. So many tinted SPFs leave my skin feeling tight and dry by mid-afternoon, and others go the opposite direction with that heavy, greasy sunscreen film that feels suffocating, especially in humid summers. Finding one that gives natural coverage, sun protection, a clean-ish formula, and feels good on the skin? That’s the unicorn.
I’ve tried a lot, and these are the ones that I rotate through most often. The one I grab depends on my mood and the finish I’m after that day — dewy, glowy, barely-there. So if you’ve been wondering what the best tinted moisturizer is, let’s dive in so we can keep you and your skin covered! Click any product name in the table to jump to where I cover it in the post.
| Tinted Moisturizer | SPF | Coverage | Finish | Best For | Clean? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crunchi Sunlight Tinted Moisturizer (TeriLyn’s top pick) | SPF 30 | Medium | Natural | Sensitive skin | Yes |
| Barefaced | SPF 50 | Sheer | Dewy | Most skin types | Yes |
| Olive Rose Skin Tint | No | Light–medium | Dewy | Dry, mature skin | Yes |
| Dime Beauty | SPF 30 | Sheer to light | Glowy | Oily | Yes |
| Skinny Confidential | SPF 40 | Light | Glowy | Mature skin, tightens & firms | Yes |
| Elta MD | SPF 40 | — | — | Combination/Mature | No |

A tinted moisturizer should do three things at once: even out your skin, hydrate it, and protect it from the sun. The ones that do all three well are rare. The clean ones even rarer. Here’s what to look at before you buy.
If sun protection is the goal, look for at least SPF 30 with broad-spectrum coverage. Mineral formulas (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are the cleaner choice and the only ones that protect from UVA and UVB. If a tinted moisturizer says “SPF 15,” treat it as makeup, not your real sunscreen. Some of my favorite picks, like Olive Rose, don’t have SPF at all, and that’s fine. You just layer a clean SPF underneath.
Dewy formulas like Counter Dew Skin and Olive Rose are for dry or mature skin. Satin and natural finishes like Saie and ILIA work better for combination skin. If you’re oily, you want a powder-set finish or a tint with built-in oil control. Most dewy tints will slide off you by lunch.
“Clean” and “natural” aren’t regulated. Look for the flags: no synthetic fragrance, no oxybenzone, no avobenzone, no parabens. Brands like Olive Rose, Crunchi, ILIA, Saie, and RMS, are formulated to clean-beauty standards you can verify.
Most tinted moisturizers are sheer to light by design. That’s the whole point. If you want medium-to-full coverage with SPF, you’re looking for a clean foundation, not a tinted moisturizer.
This is my #1 pick. I love this Crunchi Sunlight Tinted Moisturizer formula because it gives me more coverage than any other tinted moisturizer I’ve tried. If you’re not familiar with Crunchi skincare, it’s one of the cleanest beauty brands, and that’s what matters most to me. I like that it’s also super hydrating and doesn’t dry me out like others can. It has a really pretty natural finish that never feels greasy.
I always get asked about my makeup when I wear this because it makes my skin look flawless.
Crunchi is serious about clean beauty standards, so if you’re ingredient-conscious but still want something that looks and feels good on your skin, but like a bit more coverage, this is one you should definitely try.

Barefaced Tinted SPF is my second favorite tinted moisturizer with SPF. It has a barely-there feel that gives a subtle glow. This is a tinted moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture into the skin. It has sheer coverage to even out your skin tone. It uses non-nano zinc oxide for mineral sun protection (SPF 50!) without chemical sunscreen, and the formula is packed with skincare ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid for hydration and a smoother skin texture over time. I like this one almost as much as Crunchi, I just like that Crunchi gives me a little more coverage.
Skinny Confidential Caffeinated Sunscreen (contains caffeine, which helps lift and tighten the skin while blocking the sun’s rays). It really does help depuff my face on tired mornings. Use code TERILYN15 for 15% off.
Okay, I love this one so much, that it’s worth layering OVER an SPF to get that sun protection. (And these are my favorites if you want a standalone face sunscreen.) The Olive Rose Serum Hydroxytyrosol Skin Tint looks and feels like almost nothing is on your skin. It’s lightweight, hydrating, blends in effortlessly, and makes my skin look perfect. It’s similar to ILIA’s Super Serum Skin Tint (reviewed here), which gives a similar sheer, natural look and contains SPF, but the scent of the ILIA one is just unbearable (it smells like dog food). Olive Rose smells very fresh and natural and makes my skin look great the day of and over time.
The only con to this one is that it doesn’t have that true SPF. While it includes antioxidants like hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein, which offer some natural protective properties, it doesn’t have ingredients like zinc oxide that give you the broad-spectrum sun protection. So you’ll want to layer an SPF underneath this one for sure.
You can see before & afters in my Olive Rose Skin Tint blog post.

DIME Beauty’s Wonderscreen is a more affordable, clean sunscreen if you want an alternative to Crunchi’s Sunlight Tinted Moisturizer. It has SPF 30 with 19% zinc oxide, providing broad-spectrum sun protection without a white cast. The sheer tint blends in easily and gives a nice glow without looking too shiny.
However, I personally found it to be a bit greasier compared to Crunchi, which is why I use the Crunchi one more often. However, at $44 for 1.7 oz, it gives you more product for the price compared to Crunchi’s $52 for a less product. Read my full review of DIME here.
Honorable Mention:
EltaMD UV Restore Facial Sunscreen Tinted SPF 40 (I do think it’s better for oily skin, but it’s not non-toxic).
Tinted moisturizers are heavier, more hydrating, and usually have buildable coverage. Skin tints are lighter and more serum-like — they enhance what you’ve got rather than cover it. If your skin is dry or mature, a true tinted moisturizer is going to be better for you. If you want a barely-there finish that looks like your skin on a good day, go for a skin tint.
No. Some of the best clean options, like Olive Rose Skin Tint, skip SPF on purpose so you can layer your own sunscreen underneath. I like this option and love the Olive Rose formula. If SPF is built in, look for at least SPF 30, broad-spectrum, and mineral if you can find it (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are what you want to see on the label).
For most women over 40, a tinted moisturizer is going to look more flattering than full-coverage foundation. Foundation settles into fine lines and emphasizes texture. A tinted moisturizer gives you a glow without pooling in creases. My top picks for mature skin are Crunchi, Barefaced and Olive Rose.
You can absolutely wear it alone. Most days I skip foundation entirely and just use tinted moisturizer with a little concealer where I need it. If you want more coverage, layer your foundation underneath, not on top, so the tinted moisturizer’s finish sits on the surface where it belongs.
The terms get used interchangeably, but neither one is regulated. When I call something clean, I mean it’s free of synthetic fragrance, parabens, phthalates, oxybenzone, and other ingredients tied to hormone disruption. The brands I trust are the ones that publicly publish what they won’t put in their formulas: Crunchi, Olive Rose, ILIA, RMS and Saie.
Olive Rose Skin Tint if you want to skip SPF, or Crunchi Tinted Moisturizer if you want it built in. Both are deeply hydrating, give a real glow without looking greasy, and won’t cling to dry patches.
DIME Beauty Tinted Glow Wonderscreen or EltaMD. Both have a glowy or natural finish that stays put, and SPF is already built in so you’re not piling extra product on top.
Picking the right tinted moisturizer depends on your skin type and the look you’re going for. But if you aren’t sure what you want and you’re overwhelmed by options, just get Crunchi Sunlight Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30. It’s my top choice for an all-around great tinted moisturizer with SPF with a natural finish, and a clean formula.

Hello, I am looking for a clean organic tinted moisturizer but without the SPF, can you recommend anything?
I’d get the Olive Rose serum – reviewed here.
