The Best Loungewear That Doesn’t Look Sloppy

I used to feel sloppy and unproductive if I wasn’t dressed in jeans and a nice top or a dress (probably a habit left over from my Corporate America days). But these days, with two young boys, my priorities have shifted. I’ve embraced athleisure outfits for their practicality and have even gotten on board with loungewear…in limited doses. 

Loungewear, to me, is anything comfortable enough for a lazy Saturday that still looks decent enough to answer the door in, somewhere between pajamas and real clothes. It’s different from activewear, which is built for actual workouts, and from athleisure, which blends sporty pieces into everyday outfits. Loungewear prioritizes comfort over everything else.

Loungewear Sets

A matching set looks cohesive when a random sweatshirt-and-leggings pairing doesn’t, because the fabrics match exactly. My most-worn set is the Spanx AirEssentials. The fabric is thick but not as thick as sweatpants; it’s incredibly soft, and the wide-leg pants have a flattering drape.

Fabric weight is the most important here. Go too thin, and it clings and pills within a few washes. I lean on a couple of these for outfits for working from home.

My #1 pick for a cozy, high-quality lounge set is the SPANX AirEssentials Matching Set. It’s buttery-soft, flattering, and somehow manages to look nice while feeling as cozy as pajamas. The wide-leg pants skim the leg instead of clinging (and wide-leg is most on-trend right now), and the half-zip pullover that matches completes the set perfectly. Nuuds Slinky Rib

I was gifted a pair of Slinky Rib Wide Leg Pants, a matching tee, and a hoodie from Nuuds two years ago, and I still wear it a lot. The ribbed knit fits close but has enough stretch that it doesn’t feel restrictive, and it still looks like an outfit, not PJ’s. I also appreciate how flattering the top is considering how fitted it is. (You definitely want to be wearing the right bra, though. My favorite lounge bra is the EBY T-shirt bra.)

Negative Waffle Knit

Another brand I love for loungewear is Negative. I have their Waffle Knit Deep V Top and Track Pants, and it’s cute and feels on-trend. I don’t think I’d leave the house in this, but if I had to, I’d throw on sneakers and a hat and maybe a white tee under the top since the V is, indeed, deep.

Target Sweatpants and Sweatshirt

Target’s All in Motion line is my most-repurchased budget option: the wide-leg sweatpants and the crewneck sweatshirt both hold up well for the price. They also have a new line called the Airy Sleek that reminds me a lot of SPANX and Varley. It’s not quite as soft, but the styles are eerily similar, and I do really like the pieces I have. 

Abercrombie Sunday Sets

Abercrombie’s Sunday line has been one of my favorites for three years running, and I’m glad they’re still making it. The Sunday Wide-Leg Sweatpants are the pair I’m most willing to wear outside the house, since the detailing makes them look a step up from a basic sweatpant. I donated the Sunday Cropped Half-Zip last year once I stopped loving the cropped fit, though it’s still worth a look if you like that style. I would like to pair the pants with their Sunday Oversized Funnel Neck instead, since funnel necks keep popping up everywhere, and this one still works with the pants I already own.

Splendid Sets

Splendid might be the most underrated brand for loungewear, especially if you like your pieces on the lighter side. I’m probably the only person who doesn’t love wearing Spanx outside the house, and Splendid is what I put on instead. Most of their pieces run large, so if you’re between sizes, size down, especially if the cut already looks baggy or oversized. I have a small in the Palmer Terry V-Neck Sweatshirt and Terry Sweatpants in Pale Oak, but I should have gone with an XS, especially in the bottoms. For reference, I’m 5’1″ and about 120 pounds. In the Winslow Mock Neck Pullover and Winslow Pant, a small was perfect.

The Best Amazon Lounge Sets

I’m picky about fabric, so I don’t find a lot of Amazon clothing I love, but their loungewear category comes through better than their tops or dresses. These are the three matching sets I’m testing next, picked based on photos, reviews, and how closely they match sets I already own and love. For what it’s worth, I always order a small on Amazon, and in budget pieces I lean toward a darker color like navy or brown since it tends to look nicer, even when the fabric is a little thinner.

Amazon Frank & Eileen Look-Alike

This Amazon Casual Lounge Set caught my eye because it looks so much like my Frank & Eileen set, which I loved the fit of. I never got to wear that one because I got it in white and it felt too precious for this stage of my life with two little kids, so I’m curious whether a color that isn’t white will change that for me.

Amazon Spanx AirEssentials Look-Alike

This Amazon Matching Lounge Set Sweatsuit looks almost identical to my Spanx AirEssentials set, which is the one I already love, so I’m hoping the fabric comes close. It has strong reviews for a fraction of the price, so it felt worth the gamble.

Amazon Crewneck and Wide-Leg Set  

A crewneck and wide-leg set is my favorite combination, and this one looks like it’ll be cute styled with chunky sneakers like the New Balance 590. It comes in a lot of colors too, but I love the gray. I ordered it in dark brown since that looks more like real clothes for school drop-off, though the gray is the one I’d wear lounging at home.

Can You Wear Loungewear Outside?

I’m iffy about wearing loungewear out of the house. I hate feeling sloppy or like I rolled out of bed, and I still struggle with it even when I’m just working from home. If you do want to wear a set out, treat it like any other casual mom outfit: it needs to fit well and have slightly thicker fabric or more structure than what you’d wear just lounging. I wouldn’t wear my Nuuds set past my own front door, but most of the other sets work well. Accessories help too, so it feels more like an outfit than pajamas. It’s kind of amazing what a hat and a structured bag do for a matching set.

Tips for Styling Loungewear 

1. Accessorize: A structured bag, clean sneakers, and simple gold jewelry go a long way. 
2. Stick to Solids: Avoid patterns and pastels. Dark, solid washes are best to avoid pajama territory. 
3. Layer Up: Throwing on a long coat, hat, and scarf is usually enough to turn a lounge set into something you’d wear out, instead of pajamas with a jacket thrown over them.

The Bottom Line

A few years ago, I would have told you loungewear was a last resort, but if I can feel cute in this, anyone can. Start with one set you love the fit of, and the rest gets easier from there.
