How to Wear Dresses with Boots

For most of my adult life, I favored short dresses with tights and ankle boots. But now that I’m a mom in my 40s, chasing two young kids, I lean towards longer dresses with knee-high boots. But it took me a while to figure out what combos work best since ankle boots were always my default with long dresses — and they don’t always work well — and I really don’t like how ankle boots look on me without tights. So, in case you struggle too, consider this your comprehensive guide to simplify things.

Tall boots work with almost any dress because nearly any hem length works, from a mini to a maxi. And ankle boots look best with a mini dress or a full-length maxi that leaves no gap between the top of the boot shaft and the bottom of the dress. Skip midi dresses with ankle booties because there’s usually an awkward gap.

If You Only Buy One Pair of Boots for Dresses…

Get a tall pair of boots. The hem length of your dress doesn’t matter as much with knee-high boots, while short boots can look awkward if the dress isn’t long enough.

My #1 pick is the PAIGE Lillith Tall Boot. I wore them with a cream Hyacinth House sweater dress from Tuckernuck for our family photos this year. I favor a darker boot vs. a light tan, and I prefer suede over leather since it feels more versatile. But if you want to wear your boots to the office, leather is probably the better call.

Short Boots and Ankle Booties With Dresses

Short booties work with most of the dresses in my closet: maxis, shirt dresses, sweater dresses, and denim dresses all look great. They lean more casual than dressy in most cases, and they’re my go-to for transitioning a summer outfit to fall. 

The trick to wearing long dresses with short boots is making sure there is no gap between the top of the boot and the hem. A midi typically creates a gap, so opt for a maxi instead. With a shorter dress, choose any bootie that you feel is flattering on your leg. 

I personally don’t love short boots with short dresses. Most booties hit me at an unflattering spot, which just makes my legs look short and stumpy. If I do wear short-shaft boots with a shorter dress, I go for a slightly higher shaft that hits closer to mid- or lower calf, or I pair the boots with tights for an elongating effect. But this one depends a lot on your body type, so try a few heights to see what you like best.

Knee-High Boots With Dresses

In my opinion, the easiest boots to style with dresses are knee-high boots since almost any dress length works. A maxi covers the whole boot, and a midi hits just over the top of the shaft, but shorter dresses work too. I rarely find a dress where tall boots don’t work!

Besides the Paige boots pictured above, I have a few other tall boots I like with dresses:

The Larroude Ricky Boot is more casual and easy to walk in for everyday wear (here’s my full Larroude shoe review). 

For a dressier tall boot (that’s still very easy to walk in), I like the Sam Edelman Sylvia Knee High Boot.

For a more casual pair of boots, the Sam Edelman Woods Knee High Boot in Cyprus Tan Suede is my go-to. It has a short heel, but the lighter suede makes it more casual. 

Chelsea Boots With Casual Dresses

Chelsea boots are by far the hardest shoes in my closet to style with dresses, and it’s not a pairing I personally wear. I took these pictures just as examples. They are practical, though, since they’re usually weatherproof or weather-resistant and great for lots of walking in colder climates. 

If you want to try it, layer it with tights and/or boot socks that peek just above the top of the boot to balance the chunky boot.

Which Boots Work With Each Dress Length

If you already own the dress, start here. Find your hem, and you’ll know which boots to pull out.

Midi Dresses

If you’re pairing a midi dress with boots, knee-high boots are the best fit since the hem covers the top of the shaft. Ankle booties might work, but again, you don’t want a gap between the bottom of the dress and the top of the boots. 

Short and Mini Dresses

Tall boots are the safer bet with a short dress since they cover more leg and balance the shorter hem. If you’d rather wear a short dress boot, pick a pair with a higher shaft so there isn’t much bare leg between the boot and the hem. Maxi Dresses

With a maxi dress, the hem hides almost all of the boot, so you can wear just about any pair. Knee-high boots keep you warmest, while ankle booties give you a little more airflow. For a long dress with boots that feels dressier, go with a sleek tall boot with a slim heel and skip anything with a lug sole. 

Sweater Dresses

Sweater dresses work with every boot in this post, even Chelsea boots, since the thicker knit balances a chunkier boot. I share more ways to wear them in my post on how to style a sweater dress.

Boots by Color 

Brown Boots

Brown boots look best with browns, camel, cream, greens, or any patterned dress that has some brown in it. A dark chocolate brown also works with black. In the photo below, I’m wearing my Downtown Boots in chocolate suede with a black Pomander Place dress, and the brown softens the all-black look. 

Black Boots

Black boots look best with black, gray, cream, taupe, tan, or patterned dresses that have some black in them. If you’re figuring out how to wear a black dress with ankle boots, matching the boot to the dress (or to black tights) makes your legs look longer. A note on matching boots with your purse: I don’t always try to match my boots and bag exactly. If I can, I lean towards it since that’s my style, but I’d focus more on fabrics. Pair suede with suede and leather with leather. Even if the colors are different, the fabric will make them feel more cohesive.

Wearing Boots With Dresses in Winter

There are two things to consider when it’s winter time: warmth, practicality. And, well, you wanr it to look good too. Let’s address the first two:

Tall boots with tights are obviously the easiest way to keep wearing dresses once it gets cold. If you’re wondering how to wear ankle boots with dresses in winter, just add tights. Black tights or a shade close to your boot color look the cleanest. If you’re wearing chunky-soled ankle boots (like Chelsea boots) , a boot sock peeking out just above the top adds a little extra warmth.

For styling, sweater dresses and knit midis are my favorite winter dresses with boots, since the fabric adds warmth on its own. Lighter dresses still work, but you’ll want to layer more. Pay attention to coat length too. A coat that hits at or just below your dress hem looks the most put-together, while one that stops a few inches above it can look choppy.
