Shopping is a big part of my job. I try on a lot of clothes for the blog and brands send me pieces to try, so when Tartan Organizing came over a few weeks ago to do a closet refresh, it was a good chance to see what I keep wearing. This fall capsule wardrobe is exactly that: what’s hanging in my closet this fall and what I wear it all with.

Almost everything I’ve held onto is good quality and goes with nearly everything else in my closet. I just love when something can be worn so many different ways that it feels like a brand new outfit. That’s the true test of a good capsule wardrobe (and kind of the point): whether everything can mix and match with everything else. Here’s what made the cut this fall, picked for comfort and real mom life.

Shop My Other Seasonal Capsules

I’ve already shared my summer and winter capsules, so this post rounds out the set. The basics can be worn from one season to the next.

What a Fall Capsule Wardrobe Over 40 Looks Like for Me

At 41, I care a lot more about fit and fabric than trends. I want jeans with a rise that stays put, sweaters that don’t pill after a few washes, and a few layers for mixing and matching in unpredictable fall weather. (More on how I dress in my 40s vs. my 20s and 30s if you’re curious.)

My colors stay pretty neutral: gray, navy, black, brown and white, plus green (my favorite fall accent). Pick two neutrals you love and one accent color, and nearly everything below will mix together. I don’t like overly detailed tops. I prefer clean lines and solid colors, but if I do want something a little more unique I like to shop places like Tuckernuck and Sezane.

The Tops

Early fall often still feels like hot summer (welcome to the South, IYKYK), so I want sleeves I can push up and knits thin enough to layer. When it comes to basics like tees and sweaters, Gap is a great place to shop for affordable fall basics on a budget. I’ve included a few items from Gap in this capsule, but if you’re starting from scratch and want a one-stop-shop, I’d start there.

The Basic Tees

I wear my tees across all seasons, so we’ll mention them quick here. You ALWAYS need a white tee (I consider myself a white tee junkie because they’re just such a good base for any outfit), and the Sold Out NYC Iconically Soft Perfect Tee is my top pick. I have more picks at various price points in my roundup of the best white tees. In fall, I add the Faherty Sunwashed Tee in gray because it’s nice to have something other than white, and it looks warmer next to brown and navy. Add a scarf, a sweater or a fun bag, and a super basic outfit instantly looks more styled. Think of it as the base recipe for all your outfits.

The White Button-Down

A white button-down is in my capsule year-round. I’m always shocked at how much better I feel about myself when I put one on. It’s just so polished and put-together. It’s the easiest layer under a crewneck sweater (just pull the collar and cuffs out), and it looks crisp under a jacket.

The Frank & Eileen Button-Up Shirt is my all-time favorite, and I break down why the brand is worth the price in my Frank & Eileen review. It’s a little oversized, so it fits under a knit and still has room across the back. If I’m in full mom-mode I usually wear one of my more affordable button-downs like the Quince Organic Cotton Poplin Shirt. I’d recommend sizing up if you want a more relaxed fit. It just feels less risky if a child wipes their hands on me or we have an impromptu playdate in the dirt. I love the Frank & Eileen one with my whole heart, but I do save it for nicer things like the office or meetings.

The Long-Sleeve Striped Tee

The long-sleeve striped tee is one of the most underrated basics. I wear mine all the time, year-round, and in fall it doubles as a layer. It makes a plain outfit look cuter if you tie it around your waist with a dress or jeans (tying a long-sleeve or sweater around your waist is a trend this fall), or throw it over your shoulders. And it’s just really cute on its own.

My favorite is the Jenni Kayne striped tee. It’s super expensive, but I’ve never regretted buying it, even around kids. There are lots of similar options, though, and the Abercrombie Long Sleeve Boatneck Tee is a really good dupe.

The Fine-Knit Sweater

A fine-knit sweater is another nice one to have, especially if you live somewhere that stays warm well into fall like I do. My pick is the Quince fine-knit sweater in Oatmeal. You can just throw it over a tee, take it on and off throughout the day, or drape it over your shoulders. If you had to choose between a fine knit and a chunky knit, I’d definitely go with the fine knit since it’s more versatile.

The Chunky Crew-Neck Sweater

Once it’s cold, I want a cozy sweater warm enough to replace a jacket. A chunky knit leans more casual, and it’s obviously warmer, so if you live in a colder climate and you’re choosing between chunky and fine-knit, chunky might be the better pick. A chunky sweater is also good to pair with shorts when it’s still warm in the fall but starting to get a little cool. Shorts and long sleeves or sweaters are one of my favorite looks, but there is usually only a short weather-window to make the pair work.

The Frank & Eileen Montecito Sweater is that chunky style you can wear by itself or over a button-up for a more classic look. It’s Italian cotton, which means I can wear it inside all day and not feel too hot. For a lower price point, the Gap Oversized Sweater has the same relaxed shape.

The Cardigan

I wear cardigans most often fully buttoned up. That’s just how I like to style them, but they also work really well over a tee, over a dress or over the shoulders. If you had to choose between a cardigan and a fine-knit sweater, I’d probably pick the cardigan, just because it’s a little more versatile.

The Quince Mongolian Cashmere Cropped Crew Cardigan is my pick, and I like the cropped length because it hits right at the waist of high-rise jeans and trousers. If you want something longer and a little heavier, I also like the Aritzia Wool Cashmere Cardigan.

The Bottoms

Bottoms are where I’m willing to spend more money. A pair of jeans that fits well gets worn three or four days a week from September through spring, so the cost-per-wear adds up fast. I’m an absolute denim junkie (I’m constantly trying new brands and styles), so it was really hard to pare this down to just a few pairs. I keep a running list of the jeans I build every capsule around if you want more to choose from.

Dark straight-leg jeans

If I could only have one pair of bottoms in the fall, it would be a dark-wash jean. Dark wash lends itself more to fall than a light wash, and while it leans dressier, you can definitely dress it down too.

I’ve been wearing the Pistola Issa Mid Rise Relaxed Ankle Straight. The ankle length hits right above ankle boots and loafers, so your fall shoes don’t get lost. Jeans are easily the most versatile pieces in a capsule wardrobe because you can literally wear them with anything. (Ok, maybe not a dress, but you know what I mean.) If you want to look at more jeans, I compared a lot of pairs in my roundup of the best straight-leg jeans.

Wide-Leg Jeans

I like having one wide-leg pair in fall, and I always balance them with a more fitted top. The Paige Anessa 31 Inch Wide Leg Jean is my current pick. A tucked-in tee or fine-knit sweater keeps the outfit feminine so you’re not swallowed by all that fabric. Wide-leg jeans are very trendy right now and comfortable. You just have to be careful about getting the right pair and length for your frame.

Tailored Trousers

Trousers are nice just to have something a little more comfortable. If you get a pair with a pull-on waist, they’re so easy to wear. A more structured trouser leans dressier, but it can be less comfortable. There are a lot of options out there, and this could be something you add later on if you find yourself wanting a bottom that’s a little dressier.

Both of my picks are the more structured kind. I have searched high and low for trousers that look good on my petite frame, and the Aritzia Effortless Pant is the one I landed on. One note from experience: size up one or two sizes. They run small, and you want them to fit through the hip without pulling. The French Connection trousers are another good pair if you want a second color, or if you want to try a couple of pairs. I’ve found that flattering trousers vary a lot depending on your body type.

Olive Jeans

Olive jeans are just a nice option for variety, and olive feels a little more fall than navy. It’s something you’ll wear for a really long time.

My pick is the J.Crew Slim Wide-Leg Jean in Olive. As the name implies, they’re slim but still wide-leg, and I think the cut is so flattering. They can add color to an outfit that’s otherwise all neutrals.

The Dresses

Summer’s throw-on t-shirt dress becomes a sweater dress in the fall. This category is small because I end up wearing the same boots and layers with both anyway.

A sweater dress is going to be an absolute workhorse. You can wear it for church, for work, family photos and holiday events, and you can dress it up or dress it down.

The Tuckernuck Cream Ribbed Knit Corey Midi Dress is such a good fall dress, and I just wore it to family photos. The ribbed knit is so cozy and a good weight for a crisp fall day. You really just can’t go wrong with this dress because it’s so neutral and classic. It looks good with jackets, belts or simply on its own.

For something with a little pattern, I love the Cleobella Melody Midi Dress. I don’t love a floral dress, so I like that this one is paisley. It feels a little more timeless than floral, which I find myself getting tired of faster. It’s super comfortable and flattering, and it dresses up or down too. It looks cute with ballet flats but also dressier paired with boots. If you want more fall outfit ideas with dresses and boots, I have a whole post on those.

The Layers

This is the section that makes a capsule feel the most like fall, I think. I’m a major jacket junkie, so I have a lot, but these are the transitional fall pieces I wear most from September through November. Layers are how I stretch my summer basics into cooler weather.

The Barn Jacket

If I could only own one fall jacket, it would be a barn jacket. They’re on trend right now, but if you get one in a really timeless color, it’s something you’ll wear forever. Just think of the royals, who’ve been wearing barn jackets for decades, maybe centuries? Maybe it’s also a nod to my farm girl roots (more on that in my how to style cowboy boots roundup). I like that it can be dressed down, but it’s also kind of fun over a dress, and it’s a bit roomier than a denim jacket for a sweater underneath.

This fall I picked the Marine Layer Riley Barn Jacket. If you don’t want to splurge, this Amazon Barn Jacket is a good pick.

The Bomber Jacket

A bomber jacket is really cute with just a simple tee. I picked up the suede Levi’s Relaxed Dad Bomber Jacket during the Nordstrom Sale, and I really like it. It kind of becomes the whole outfit, so you can keep the rest of it simple. I’m a sucker for all things suede, but there are also leather, canvas and even nylon bombers if suede isn’t your thing.

If you want a denim jacket instead, the Favorite Daughter Otto Boyfriend Jacket has the same oversized shape.

The Blazer

A blazer is how you make any outfit look instantly put together. You can dress it up for work, but you can also throw it over a dress like a jacket, or wear it with sneakers and a tee for a casual look. I had a white blazer in my summer capsule (for when the AC gets a little aggressive), but for fall, the rich plaids and browns are just too good to pass up.

My fall pick is the Madewell Mercer Relaxed Blazer. The relaxed cut leaves room for a fine-knit sweater or a button-up underneath.

The Trench Coat

A trench is really nice for rainy days, obviously, but it’s also really elongating. It makes an outfit look pulled together like a blazer does, but it doesn’t feel as stuffy as a blazer can.

I like the Ralph Lauren Hooded Coat, a mid-length, trench-style rain coat, and bonus points for a nice big hood to keep my hair dry. The hood is removable, so you can take it off when it’s not raining and you just want the extra layer. At 34 inches, it’s long enough to cover a blazer or chunky sweater. I also recently found this trench on Amazon and was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it. I got the khaki color but think I’m going to exchange it for camel. It’s a great affordable basic if the Ralph Lauren one doesn’t work in your budget.

The Shoes

Is there anything that makes you more excited for fall than pulling out your boot collection? Ok, maybe some would argue pumpkin spice anything, but it’s boots for me. In You’ve Got Mail, Joe Fox would send a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils to welcome in fall. I’d point you to these boots.

Ankle Boots

I don’t know if I could choose between ankle boots and tall boots, which is why both made it into my capsule. I’d go with brown instead of black, since brown is a little more forgiving to style and a black boot can look a little more harsh. But you can wear brown with black, so it doesn’t really matter. Just choose what you like best.

I like something with a little bit of a heel, like the Sam Edelman Saige Ankle Bootie in Spiced Pecan. I’m also partial to a suede ankle boot, and the Margaux Downton Boot is a lower, more casual pair. If your style is more casual, you might like a Chelsea boot. I have more on wearing ankle boots with dresses if you want ideas.

Tall boots

Tall boots are a great way to keep wearing dresses once it gets cold, and they work with both short and long dresses. I really like a suede tall boot in a darker color, but that’s just personal preference.

This season I went lighter with the suede Sam Edelman Sylvia Knee High Boot, and it works with both dresses in this capsule. I’ve never met a Sam Edelman shoe I didn’t like.

Loafers

The Sam Edelman Loraine Loafers are my favorite loafers of all time, and they’re comfortable from day one. I have been wearing these loafers for literally 15 years. They look so much more polished and put together than a sneaker, but they’re just as comfortable most of the time.

I really like loafers paired with socks, and I break down what socks to wear with loafers if you want to try it.

White Sneakers

Of course, white sneakers are a must, because mom life just requires a sneaker. Don’t count them out just because fall has arrived. They work in basically any season, and they’re the shoe I always wear when I just need something basic and casual.

The Veja Campo is the pair I wear most, and the New Balance 530 is a sportier pair I like for busy days. I compared a lot of pairs for my white sneakers roundup if you want more to choose from (spoiler alert: the Veja Campo is my top pick).

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats are great for days when I want something dressier than sneakers but still flat. If you had to choose between Mary Janes and ballet flats, I’d go with Mary Janes because I think they’re more comfortable. But either works, and they’re cute with straight-leg jeans or the paisley dress.

The Madewell Greta Ballet Flat has a strap, so it’s the best of both, and it’s simple enough to go with any outfit here.

A Heel

I don’t wear heels often, but it’s nice to have one in my capsule for dinners and events. If you just want one heel that’ll work whenever you need it, look for one that isn’t too high or wobbly. The Brandy Pointed Toe Mule from Nordstrom has a low heel I don’t mind standing in all evening.

The Accessories

Accessories are a great way to make outfits look different from week to week. Here are a few of my basics I always wear.

The Bag

I’m a major purse junkie, and what bag you get really depends on your stage of life. If you’re carrying a laptop or lots of kids’ things around, you’re going to want a larger tote that’s more casual. My everyday bag is the Cuyana Classic Easy Tote. It fits my laptop and whatever snacks and toy trucks the boys hand me on the way out the door, and the dark brown leather goes with the boots and belts in this capsule. It won best bag in my best mom purse roundup, and I wrote all about the brand in my Cuyana review.

If you want something smaller for nights out, the J.Crew Factory Quinn Mini Bucket Bag is a great size, and again, I love the suede. For something dressier and super high quality, I’m in love with the Wandler Veneto Shoulder Bag. It’s spendy, but it will last a lifetime.

Jewelry

I’m a gold person, and I keep fall jewelry simple. Mejuri is one of the places I shop most for jewelry. These small gold hoops go with any outfit, every day. If you want something a little dressier, I also love these pearl drop earrings. I like dressing pearls down because of how unexpected it feels.

For a necklace, I can’t stop wearing this Catori Life pendant necklace. It works with just about anything. And this Electric Picks bracelet has been on repeat for months. It’s comfortable and goes with everything.

Belts

I really like belts because my style leans more tailored. You can take a basic outfit, throw on a belt, and you just look a lot nicer. I wear the Quince Josie European Leather Braided Belt almost daily. For trousers and dresses, I switch to something a little dressier, like this B-Low the Belt Ellie Croco Leather Belt in black.

The Scarf

A scarf is just a nice item to have. Whether you wear it over your shoulders, around your neck, or tie it on your bag, it adds color, which is especially nice when the rest of your closet is pretty neutral, like mine.

The Wild Rag from Guest in Residence comes in a lot of color combos so you can pick one that adds the color you want. If you want a more affordable version, I like this one from J.Crew.

Everything above is worth spending more money on because those pieces will last you for years. This list is the opposite. These are the fall 2026 fashion trends I like, but I wouldn’t put investment money into them because they date quickly.

If you love one, go for it. Just buy it at a lower price point (J.Crew, Quince, Gap or Amazon are my go-tos) and let the main capsule pieces be where you spend your budget.

I also get asked about an Amazon capsule wardrobe a lot. I share a mix of high and low, but I’m extremely picky about Amazon finds, and I don’t often find pieces there I’d recommend across the board. I’ve added a few that pass the test in this post, and you’ll find more Amazon picks I stand behind in my teacher outfits post.

Fringe

Fringe is showing up on jackets, bags, skirts and even boots this fall. I like it in small doses, but it’s so specific that it’s hard to wear with the rest of a capsule, and it’ll look dated in a year or two. This fringe cardigan from Gap and this fringe sweater from Amazon keep the price low, and if you want to spend a little more, I like this longline fringe cardigan from Anthropologie.

Asymmetrical Details

One-shoulder tops and uneven hems look fresh right now. They’re also the first thing that makes an outfit look like it’s from a specific year, so I’d keep this one inexpensive. This asymmetrical top from Gap is an easy place to start, and I also like this Aritzia top.

Leopard

Leopard comes back every few years, and a small dose goes a long way. A leopard belt is the cheapest way to try the trend, and you can wear it with almost anything. If you want more, these leopard jeans from Gap Factory or this Quince silk skirt in leopard are good mid-range picks.

Satin Basics

Satin skirts, pants and slip dresses are all over my feed. They look so pretty, but satin wrinkles easily and shows every water spot, so I don’t want to spend much on it. I recently wore this satin dress from Banana Republic to an event. I felt so pretty in it, and I got so many compliments. I also like these silk pants from J.Crew and these brown satin pants from Madewell.

Ballet Sneakers

Ballet sneakers are part sneaker, part ballet flat, and they’re the trend I like the least. I like how they look on some people, but they’re just really not very cute in my opinion. If you want to try them, these ballet sneakers from Anthropologie or this Amazon pair are a low-commitment way to see if you like them. I’d much rather spend my money on comfortable shoes and boots I love that aren’t super trendy.

FAQs

What is a fall capsule wardrobe?

A fall capsule wardrobe is a small set of mix-and-match clothes, shoes and accessories built for cooler weather, with more layers and closed-toe shoes than summer.

How many pieces should a fall capsule wardrobe have?

Mine is 23 pieces this fall (17 clothing pieces and 6 pairs of shoes), not counting a few accessories. Most people land around 20 to 30, give or take, depending on their lifestyle and what their week looks like. There’s no rule, so start with what you wear most and fill in the gaps.

What colors should be in a fall capsule wardrobe?

Start with two neutrals and add one accent color. My fall capsule wardrobe colors are gray, navy, black, brown and white, plus green as my accent. Brown and navy are the neutrals I lean on in fall because they work with every denim wash.

Can I wear my summer capsule pieces in fall?

Yes. Most of my summer tees, button-downs and jeans stay in rotation, and I add layers on top. A cardigan, barn jacket or blazer help change the outfit and keep you warm for the cooler temps. I have more ideas in my summer to fall transitional outfits post.

How do I build a fall capsule wardrobe over 40?

Start with fit and fabric. At 41, I look for a rise that stays put, knits that hold their shape and a few good layers, then build around two neutrals and one accent color. Skip the trend pieces or buy them cheap, and put your budget toward jeans, sweaters and a jacket you’ll wear for years.

What shoes do I need for a fall capsule wardrobe?

Ankle boots for jeans and dresses, loafers to dress up trousers (here’s how I style mine) and white sneakers for casual weekends (my top white sneaker picks). You can add a heel and tall boot if you need some dressier options for fall.

Alright, I’ll wrap this up and go switch the rest of my closet over for fall. Everything in this post is linked and shoppable in my ShopMy collection below.
