A favorite things party is a gift exchange where every guest brings two gifts (usually the same, sometimes different, depending on the party you go to) of something they love, all within the set budget. Everyone goes home with the same number of gifts, picked from what everyone else brought. These favorite things party gift ideas are the things I’d bring, sorted by price.

I got invited to a favorite things party around Valentine’s Day, and it was so much fun. I came home with the most random favorite things gifts that I fell in love with that I wouldn’t normally have bought for myself. The format can be similar to a white elephant party, only these items are people’s “favorite things,” as the party name implies.

The pressure is picking the “favorite” thing. My rule is simple: bring the thing you’d rebuy without thinking, not what you think will impress the room. Some of these aren’t exciting, but they’re all things I would (and have) told my best friends to buy.

How a Favorite Things Party Works

Hosts all run it a little differently, but this is how most parties go.

The host sets a per-item budget, usually $10 to $25. Everyone brings two of the same item, and they all go out on a table. You go around the room, hold up what you brought, and say why you love it.

Hosts hand out the gifts a few different ways. At the one I went to, every gift had a number; we drew numbers from a bowl, and that’s how you got yours. Other hosts have everyone write their name on slips, and each guest draws two names after she shares.

I have heard of other formats that follow more of a white elephant style where you draw a number; number one picks first, opens the gift, and you move to number two, and so on in numerical order. Number two can steal any already-opened gift or open a new one. Usually, if you’re playing the steal-a-gift method, a gift can no longer be stolen once it’s on its third owner.

Favorite Things Party Gift Ideas Under $10

Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover bottle

Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover (about $5). I really wanted to start doing my own nails at home, and I recently bought this to see if it would help with my cuticles. Having your cuticles cut is absolutely the worst part of getting your nails done, but it’s also the hardest thing to do at home. It’s shocking how quickly this cleans up your cuticles and just how much it gets off your nails, it’s now one of my new favorites.

Kitsch satin pillow scrunchies in champagne and black

Kitsch Pillow Satin Scrunchies (about $10 for two). I use this to pull my hair up every single night, and my blowouts last three to four days until my sweaty workouts ruin them. This is a great gift that prevents any creases and gives it volume since it’s up all night.

Boka fluoride-free hydroxyapatite whitening toothpaste tube

Boka toothpaste (usually $8 to $10 on Amazon). Instead of opting for a scented candle, why not give toothpaste! I can’t stand traditional fluoride toothpaste, and I love hydroxyapatite toothpaste so much that I wrote a whole post on the best hydroxyapatite toothpaste brands. Spoiler alert: this is the best one. It makes my teeth feel so clean, and it whitens.

LMNT electrolyte drink mix box and packet

LMNT electrolyte packets (about $1.50 a packet). This feels like a more practical item to give, but also maybe something someone wouldn’t buy themselves. I fell in love with LMNT when I was breastfeeding Thomas, and I really wish I’d had it when I was running marathons. If you’re always thirsty, you’ll love this. You can’t buy single packets, so split a 30-count box (about $45) and tie five or six together with a ribbon. If you want a deep dive on LMNT (and proof of how much I love it), I have a full unsponsored LMNT review on the blog.

Billie Whipped Shave Cream can

Billie Whipped Shave Cream ($8 to $10). This is so niche, but it’s the only shave cream I’ve bought in about seven years. I have sensitive skin, and this protects it and is a great way to get my legs smooth. Tommy has started using it too. It’s also on my list of Amazon beauty favorites.

Megababe Space Bar charcoal underarm soap bar and box

Megababe Space Bar (about $8). If you use deodorant and skip antiperspirant, a charcoal bar is a good idea. I wash with this in the shower to get rid of underarm stank, so my deodorant has a fighting chance. You lather it on and leave it for 60 seconds before you rinse. (It pairs well with the Saltair deodorant in the $30 section below.)

Favorite Things Party Gift Ideas Under $20

LONDONTOWN kur Illuminating Nail Concealer bottle in Bubble

LONDONTOWN kur Illuminating Nail Concealer ($20). If you struggle to paint your nails without getting it everywhere, try a nail concealer. It’s sheer, so it’s more forgiving, and it makes them look great. My favorite shade is Bubble.

Eachy cream travel makeup bag open and packed with toiletries

Eachy Travel Makeup Bag ($20). The price range on this bag fluctuates on Amazon a lot, but it’s usually right around the $20 mark. I take this every time I travel. You can use it for all your makeup, or I like to throw all my hair and body care items in it. It fits a shocking amount of products; I’m surprised every time I pack it. It’s a great new bag just in time for holiday travel.

Medicube collagen overnight wrapping mask tube

Medicube Collagen Mask ($19). I was skeptical about this at first because it was all the rage on social media, but I tried it and now I love it. It goes on as a gel, and you sleep in it and peel it off in the morning. It’s basically an overnight face mask and you’ll be surprised by how good your skin feels. All the girls at the party will want this one.

+Lux Unfiltered Iced Latte cooling under eye patches

Eye patches ($20 to $24). These +Lux Cooling Under Eye Patches are my favorite under-eye patches I buy from Amazon. Fair warning, it’s usually around $32 for a pack of ten. So take a few out and keep them for yourself and bundle the rest for your $20 gift. I also love these Olive Tree Glow Eye Patches; they’re a bit more of a splurge because one pair is $12.50, but you could put two together and be a bit over the $20 limit.

Pair of black rechargeable hand warmers

Rechargeable Hand Warmers ($18). I hate being cold, especially after growing up in Utah with long winters and a lot of snow. Nothing feels better than sticking your hands in your pockets and finding them toasty warm. It’s super convenient that these recharge, so there’s no need to buy packs of hand warmers that don’t last very long.

Favorite Things Party Gift Ideas Under $30

This seems to be the price point where most favorite things parties land (some parties choose a $25 price limit, specifically, but it varies). So you can pick one of the items below, or you could bundle a couple of items from the cheaper lists above.

Two tortoiseshell stemless wine glasses

Tortoise stemless wine glasses ($28 for two). This is an excellent gift if the crowd are wine lovers. Every time I pull these out, people compliment them and are shocked when I tell them they’re from Amazon. I give them as teacher gifts every year too.

Natori Bliss Perfection lace thong two-pack in nude

Natori Bliss Perfection thong (two for $36). Sure, you could give lip gloss or your favorite book, but a thong is a lot more fun;) I’ve tried about a dozen different thongs because that’s the only type of underwear I will ever, ever wear, and these are still my all-time favorite. Yes, they’re significantly better than Hanky Panky. They’re one size fits all, so you don’t have to worry about sizing. This is the gift I took to one of the parties I went to and the women loved it!

BaubleBar Kourtney gold huggie earrings with round crystal stone

BaubleBar Kourtney Huggie Earrings ($28). Thes earrings are one of my new favorite things. They’re chunky, glossy gold huggies with a round glass stone, and they’re not too heavy. Earrings are a safe choice when you have no idea who’s going to end up with your gift.

Saltair Serum Deodorant two-pack in Salt Water Vanilla

Saltair Serum Deodorant ($26 for a two-pack). I’ve tried all the natural, aluminum-free deodorants, and this is the only one that WORKS. It’s a roll-on serum with AHAs, and the link is the Salt Water Vanilla two-pack. You could also pair it with the Megababe bar if you’re making the switch to aluminum-free.

Alice Lane tinted glass bubble candle dish

Alice Lane Bubble Candle Dish ($29). I find home decor gifts tend to be really popular at favorite things parties. This dish is a favorite home item and is small enough for a little candle or a diffuser, and the tinted bubble glass makes it look more expensive than it is.

Coco & Eve Face Tanning Micromist bottle

Coco & Eve Face Tanning Micromist ($29). This is the best face tanning product out there in my opinion. I like that it’s a mist vs. drops you have to mix with your moisturizer. It also makes it super easy to just spray on instead of feeling like another skincare routine step. I recommend this to all my friends because who doesn’t want a little glow for the holiday season.

Favorite Things Party Gift Ideas Under $50

$50 is definitely on the high end for a party, so I don’t think you’ll see this price point that often. But in the event you do have a bougie high-dollar group of friends, this is a great list to choose from. This list is also great for Christmas gifts for sisters, best friends or mothers-in-law. If you need more ideas for that category, check out my gift guide for her.

Colleen Rothschild Quench & Shine Restorative Mask jar

Colleen Rothschild Quench & Shine Restorative Mask ($38). This is my weekly mask for dry ends, and the winner in my post on the best hair mask for dry, damaged hair. It’s a staple hair product in the winter when my hair gets drier.

Colleen Rothschild Illuminating Tinted Eye Cream pump bottle

Colleen Rothschild Illuminating Tinted Eye Cream ($48). I’ve had this in my skincare drawer for 7+ years, and it’s a must on busy mornings when I’m running to school drop-off. It brightens my under-eyes and moisturizes like a regular eye cream, and I’ve converted a lot of friends to it. It also won my roundup of the best tinted eye creams. It’s a great option for mornings on-the-go. Code TERILYN20 gets you 20% off on their site if you’d rather skip Amazon.

Revision Skincare YouthFull Lip Replenisher tube

Revision Skincare YouthFull Lip Replenisher ($45). This is one of my current favorite things. A lip treatment with hyaluronic acid that keeps my lips from cracking in the winter. It’s unscented and plumps a little, and it doesn’t sting like most plumpers.

Olive Tree People HT Blush Glow cream blush stick

Olive Tree People HT Blush Glow ($44.95). What girl doesn’t love a good beauty item? This is one of my absolute favorite cream blushes. The formula glides on and blends so well and the color payoff is excellent. It will last you forever because you don’t need a lot to add color to your cheeks. I also love this brand because it’s nontoxic.

Olive Tree People HT Skin Glow Setting Spray bottle

Olive Tree People HT Skin Glow Setting Spray ($36.95). This setting spray is one of my personal favorites and really does help your makeup stay put all day. Again, I like it because this brand is nontoxic and it’s also super light and refreshing.

DONAMA contoured memory foam pillow

DONAMA Contour Memory Foam Pillow ($39.99). I don’t think I can accurately describe my love for this pillow in one paragraph. When I traveled home to Utah, I promptly ordered one to my hotel, which should tell you everything you need to know. I’ve been trying to get all my family members to understand my love for this pillow. The memory foam is contoured with two heights, so you can flip it to whichever fits how you sleep.

That’s my list of favorite things party gift ideas. If you’re still stuck after all these suggestions, I’m not sure how to help you…JK. It might help to look through your Amazon history and remember what you love most or what you repeatedly rebuy.

And if you need gift ideas past the party, my holiday gift guides are all in one place, and my post on gifts for people who have everything covers the hard-to-shop-for crowd.

Favorite Things Party FAQ

How much should you spend on a favorite things party gift?

Whatever cap the host set. Most hosts land between $10 and $25 per item, and small groups sometimes go up to $50. The tiers above match the caps I see most.

How many gifts do you bring to a favorite things party?

Usually two identical gifts, though some hosts ask for three. Very small groups sometimes bring one for every guest on the list. The invitation should say, but all favorite things party rules vary.

Do you wrap gifts for a favorite things party?

I’ve seen both ways. For unwrapped, the gifts sit out on a table so everyone can see them, and each guest explains why hers is a favorite before handing it over. For wrapped gifts, it’s often played white elephant style where the gifts are wrapped and then revealed.

What should you bring to a favorite things party?

Something you use and rebuy yourself, at the cap the host set. The best gifts I’ve gotten were the boring ones somebody swore by.

What’s the difference between a favorite things party and a white elephant?

White elephant gifts are usually cheap or corny, and they’re wrapped, stolen, and played for laughs. At a favorite things party, everyone brings something nice that they love, and you usually go home with a couple of things you’ll use.
