If there’s one item in my closet that gets the most mileage in my summer wardrobe, it’s an easy, flattering dress. Whether I’m chasing kids or just trying to look semi-put-together for errands and park hangs, I’ve found a few go-to summer dress styles that make getting dressed feel effortless (and if I’m not in a dress, I’m in one of these easy-to-recreate mom looks). Dresses happen to be my favorite thing to shop for, since they make an entire outfit on their own (check out some of Nordstrom’s best fall dresses here).
Most of the options below are breastfeeding-friendly (I’m recently finished breastfeeding, so almost every dress I wear is nursing-friendly), work great with sneakers or sandals, and can be dressed up or down. I also always wear shorts under shorter dresses to avoid any wardrobe mishaps.
These are my favorite easy summer dresses for moms. They’re comfortable summer dresses I reach for on repeat whether it’s school pickup, a farmers market, a walk with friends, or just a casual summer day. A good summer dress for mom should have breathable fabric that’s forgiving and moves with you. If you’re building a summer capsule wardrobe, a few of these picks are the best place to start.
Maxi dresses are my secret weapon in the summer. They feel elevated (I get a compliment almost every time I wear one), but they’re still easy. The length is nice beacuse I don’t have to worry about bending over to pick up a toddler or chasing after a runaway snack cup. The key is to find a maxi dress made of a fabric that isn’t fussy and doesn’t require special care or laundering (because what person has time for regular dry cleaning runs?).
Best for: Casual days, brunch, beach trips, or church
Why I love them: Flattering, comfy, and feminine
Style tip: Add sandals and a crossbody bag, and you’re good to go (here are some of the best mom purses)
You can even repurpose some of your summer dresses for the winter months. I have all the details on how to wear dresses in the winter at this post.
This Rory maxi dress is shockingly flattering (I assumed it would swallow me since I’m 5’1″, but it looks great), and easy to style. I got an XS and style with the neutral woven slide sandals pictured below and my favorite Mejuri jewelry. Cuff or roll the sleeves and call it a day. While Frank and Eileen is pricey, the brand was made by moms (for moms), and everything is washable. HIGHLY recommend (I rounded up my favorite pieces from Frank & Eileen)!

This Apiece Apart Siempre Tank Maxi is a maxi dress that does the most without requiring the most, if you know what I mean. I wasn’t a fan of the drop waist look until this dress, and paired with the A-line fit on the skirt, it’s the perfect flattering fit. The navy floral print is elevated but still fun, and with the tank silhouette, you’ll stay cool on humid summer days. I’m styling it with Loeffler Randall flat sandals and some simple jewelry. That’s all you really need for this one. I wear an XS.

A black dress is a non-negotiable in any summer wardrobe, and the KOURT Ione Dress is my current favorite. It’s sleek and minimal in a way that works across a lot of occasions. Wear it to dinner or GNO, or style it down with sneakers on a Saturday. The drape of this dress is perfectly loose and not too tight. It’s one of the best casual dresses for daily wear that can also go somewhere nicer. I’d style it with neutral flat sandals for summer. I’m wearing them with black Margaux sandals like these.

T-shirt dresses are the ultimate mom uniform. They’re comfy and almost always washable, plus they go with everything. I love that you can throw on a t-shirt dress with sneakers or sandals, and still feel feminine and cute. T-shirt dresses are also easy to pair with ball caps and ponytails, so you don’t even need to worry about having your hair done.
Best for: Errands, preschool pickup, lounging
Why I love them: Easy to throw on, super versatile, and often made from breathable cotton
Style tip: Pair with white sneakers and a crossbody
For something playful, this Relaxed T-Shirt Dress from GAP is a great option. I love the idea of pairing this dress with white or navy sneakers for an Americana look that’s very simple and laid back.
This is a splurge for a t-shirt dress, but the Simon Miller Lottie Dress in Navy Stripe is absolutely perfect. The stripes are a little wider than most t-shirt dresses, and the built-in tie waist makes it unique and more flattering than a standard boxy tee dress. I also love the larger sleeves.
Madewell consistently does t-shirt dresses well. Their Crewneck Mini T-Shirt Dress is typically a looser fit with a slightly thicker fabric, so there’s no flimsiness here. It washes well and doesn’t cling in the wrong places. I feel like Madewell is a reliable bet if you’re not sure where to start. You could play around with this and even throw on a belt to give it more shape.
When I think of shirtdresses, I think of anything with a collar. These are probably my favorite style of dress to wear since they feel polished and nice without being fussy. I wear shirt dresses with everything from sneakers to loafers.
Best for: Lunch dates, school events, casual work days (here are some other great work-from-home outfit ideas)
Why I love them: Button fronts make them easy for nursing, and the fit is super forgiving but polished
Style tip: Wear with loafers or flat sandals and a structured tote
The Charlie Shirtdress might be my favorite dress of all time. I’ve always been a fan of sleeveless tops and dresses, and this one hits in all the right places. The length is great for all-day wear, and it’s not too short when paired with heels (wear easy heels with this dress, like these M.Gemi block heels). The front placket is also functional, which makes it a great nursing-friendly option. I wear an XS in this. In the photos below, I’m wearing canvas Tretorn sneakers, which are on my list of favorite white sneakers.

Another favorite of mine: the Callahan Shirt Dress (also from Tuckeruck, shocker). This is a simple, throw-and-go dress that pairs well with sneakers, sandals, loafers, and ballet flats. I appreciate that the sleeves can be worn cuffed or full-length. I always wear shorts under dresses, but especially with this dress since the ruffled hem can quickly catch the wind if you’re not careful.

This Buck Mason Reef Stripe Mainstay Shirt Dress is another easy cotton option for summer days when you want something relaxed but still makes you feel dressed up. You’ll get lots of compliments on this one. The stripe is subtle and neutral, so it can pair with pretty much any sandal or sneaker. This dress comes with a waist tie that you can add for more shape, or don’t worry about it for a boxier fit (which I prefer on this dress).
Nothing says summer like a classic sundress. I look for styles with wide straps and soft fabrics. I prefer a sundress with a little bit of shape, so it feels more feminine.
Best for: Weekend adventures, farmers markets, casual gatherings
Why I love them: Breezy and cute but still functional for mom life
Style tip: Throw on a straw hat and comfy sandals
The Hill House Cosima Nap Midi Dress in Navy Stripe is a recent addition and I love it. It has the same smocked bodice that makes the classic Ellie Nap Dress so flattering and nursing-friendly, but the stripe pattern is a little more elevated. This style doesn’t pull down as easily for nursing, so I’d go with the Ellie Nap Dress if that’s a must for you. I wear an XS, same as in all my Hill House dresses. Style with sneakers or sandals depending on the occasion.
The Tuckernuck Navy Chino Rhoda Mini Dress is a dress I’ve worn nonstop ever since I got it. I like it with neutral flat sandals or (hear me out) cowboy boots for a western style. The chino style is SO in this summer, and makes this dress stand out because it’s cute and summery, but also polished. This could even be a fun work-from-home outfit.

The fact that this Paige striped sundress is 100% cotton already makes it an easy summer contender. It’s a fit and flare cut with spaghetti straps (super flattering), and pairs beautifully with these block heels, sandals, or white sneakers, depending on the look or event you’re dressing for.

I recently got this white linen midi, and have worn it way more than I even thought I would. Linen is one of the best fabrics for a hot summer day, and this dress is light and breathable. Pair it with white sneakers for a really clean, simple look, or heels for a summer night out.

These dresses work from pickleball to a park playdate. In my 20s and 30s, I favored athletic dresses with thinner straps and shorter hemlines, but now that I’m 41, I want a little more coverage. These all feel grown-up but are flattering and timeless, so they’ll be in my closet for years (which is my goal when shopping). I have more athleisure outfit ideas here.
Best for: Pickleball, golf, long walks, park days, errands
Style tip: Toss on a baseball cap and sneakers for the ultimate “cool mom” look.
I had a similar dress before I got this one, and what made the Tuckernuck Eden Alcott Golf Dress win a permanent spot in my closet is the way it flows. It drapes the body beautifully. Not too loose, not too tight, just perfect. The fabric is extremely lightweight (but not see-through), which I appreciate in the humid South. If I’m golfing, I’m almost always wearing this, but I have lots of cute ideas for what to wear golfing.
I’ve had the Tuckernuck Navy Performance Jersey Suzanne Tennis Dress for years because it’s flattering and practical, not to mention, it never goes out of style. I wear it for long walks with friends and feel cute enough to grab coffee or lunch afterwards. It would also be perfect if you’re a tennis or pickleball girly.
The Addison Bay Mixed Sport Light Match Active Dress is a little more casual and slightly more revealing than the other options, but it’s the most unique. I’ve had it in my ShopMy wishlist for months, so I think I just need to break down and get it.
When you’re a mom, the right summer dress is about more than just looking cute. It needs to move with you and hold up to spills, or ideally work for nursing if you’re in that season. Prioritize breathable fabrics (like cotton and linen), look for dresses with a little stretch or room, and always, always wear shorts underneath the shorter ones… trust me.
