From our first awkward Valentine’s Day to our first married Valentine’s Day

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you may know that I LOVE VALENTINE’S DAY. It’s one of my favorite holidays, probably because we had the Valentine Man growing up. And when Tommy and I were first dating, somehow he found out that Valentine’s Day holds a very special place in my heart.

We’d been dating for about 3 months, so not quite long enough to do anything big (we hadn’t even said “I love you” yet), but it was long enough that we wanted to do something. He ignored everyone’s advice (nice dinner! nice gift!) and did what he thought I would love: order Teeter Thai takeout, picked up a bottle of red wine and Justin’s Peanut Butter cups, and gave me a card with a very sweet note. Nailed it.

Then things things got interesting. As he was leaving to pick up Teeter Thai, he gave me a hug and a kiss and said, “I’ll be right back. I love you!” He just flipped out those last three words like we’d been married for 10 years.

Me: “Uh, okay! See you soon!”

His eyes doubled in size and he gave me another hug and left. Then, he came back down the hallway, gave me another kiss and left.

Meanwhile, I was left to wonder if he’d actually meant it or if it was an accident. Or both. When he came back, I asked him if he meant what he said or if it was “something you accidentally say to coworkers at the end of a call.” His response: “I don’t feel the same way about you that I do my coworkers.” Very politically correct answer, Tommy. Thanks.

And then we didn’t say I love you again for 3 more months. And I said it first at that point… after agonizing for a few months over whether he was waiting for me to say it back, and did he mean it when he said it on Valentine’s Day, and does he think I don’t love him, and why hasn’t he said it again if he actually meant it?! And I’m going to explode if I don’t tell him because holy crap I love this man, but does he feel like he needs to say it first?! Man, dating can be rough. (Right??)

He claims he said it first because he meant it on that very first Valentine’s Day, but I don’t think he gets credit for that since he didn’t do it on purpose. 😉

Either way, I’m SO grateful I get to spend every Valentine’s Day for the rest of my life with this man.

    1. My husband first told me he loved me in the first (dating) anniversary card he gave me. 1 whole year. I knew after a few months and was ready to explode.

    2. So cute!

My bf kept saying “I have strong feelings for you.” Or “I wish I could tell you how I really feel….” as gave me an ‘I love you’ balloon. ? A Little while later after I had been gone on a business trip, we said it to each other upon my arrival home. Nothing like a little separation to get them to say it. ?

      Love your blog! ?

    3. Hahaha I love this ? And yes of course he meant it then! I’m sure he knew he loved you much sooner than that even. Doesn’t take long to fall head over heels when it’s the real thing
