Updated June 2026

The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays. I have always been patriotic and having had multiple family members serve our country, I feel a great sense of pride to be an American. We don’t have any solidified traditions with the boys for the 4th of July yet, but we almost always head to Boone to watch fireworks and spend time with family.

4th of July Outfit Ideas (4 Easy Formulas)

1. Stripes + Festive Accessories

Navy and white stripes hit two of the three patriotic colors without going full-on flag print. Accessories are where you can make it festive. A pop of red would be the easiest option, but anything patriotic works. A red bag, a red sandal and you’re set.

I’m wearing the Z Supply Striped Tee here with my favorite denim shorts. (I have a whole post on my favorite Abercrombie denim shorts if you want to see all the options.) I chose this combo because it’s something I would wear all summer long, but adding red accessories for the 4th is what makes it festive.

2. A Matching Set

A matching set is one of the easiest 4th of July outfits because the coordination is built in. Wear it in navy or go all red — both work great for the 4th. I’m wearing the Gap Linen Crop Tank with the matching linen pants in red here, and I also love this Rails Calypso Vest as an alternative with white or navy linen pants. The Aritzia Linen Sontag pants are some of my favorite linen pants because they wear well and don’t get saggy.

If you want shorts, this Lake short set in Navy is so comfortable and perfect for a hot 4th outdoors for a BBQ outfit or other hot 4th of July activity.

3. White Tee with Linen Pants or Shorts

Don’t underestimate the power of basic white tee. The white grounds a bolder choice like red pants and the red takes care of the festive part. It’s also a strong option if you don’t want to be in a dress all day. A basic white tee is perfect with the red Gap Linen Pants. Or, linen shorts work just as well if the heat is brutal.

I’m wearing the Iconically Soft Perfect White Tee, my favorite after testing several of the most popular options in my white tee roundup. It is pricey for a white tee, but worth it in my opinion! If you want a more affordable option, I also love these Amazon white tees.

Cute 4th of July Dresses

Dresses for the 4th of July

Dresses are probably the easiest way to nail the 4th of July look. A classic navy, white, or striped dress covers all the bases. And a red accessory is all you need to make it feel festive. Below are my favorites across a range of styles and price points.

Long Dresses

This Hill House Cosima nap Midi is the cutest 4th of July outfit. The blue stripe with the pop of red with the sandals and woven bag make it come together perfectly patriotic without being cheesy. Hill House makes some of my favorite dresses. I did a full breakdown on whether they’re worth it in my Hill House review. Spoiler: they are. I particularly like Hill House dresses for summer because even if they are long (like the Cosima midi pictured above) they are still lightweight and breezy enough to take on the summer heat.

Short Dresses

Short dresses just feel cooler sometimes if you’re in the summer heat. I love this Tuckernuck Rhoda Mini dress in Navy. I paired it with cowboy boots in my how to style cowboy boots roundup. There are so many fun 4th of July events that lean country, so don’t write off cowboy boots for the 4th!

The Angie Dress from Hill House is one of my favorites for the 4th. It’s short, it’s white, and the linen keeps it comfortable even when it’s hot out. I always recommend wearing shorts underneath with dresses this length, just so you’re not thinking about it all day. I loved the Angie dress enough to include it in my summer capsule wardrobe post as well.

Any of these dress options would work great with my go-to neutral sandals or a pair of white sneakers (sneakers with dresses is one of my favorite outfit combinations).

Festive Tops

You won’t catch me and my boys in matching patriotic tees, but this American Flag sweater from Tuckernuck is the type of festive outfit I can get behind. You’ll wear it all year long and it’s cute with flattering jeans, my favorite jean shorts or layered over your shoulders with a dress. Here’s a budget-friendly version of the American Flag sweater from Old Navy, but I think the Tuckernuck version is worth it because it feels like a staple for events all year.

If you don’t live in a climate where a long-sleeve sweater makes sense, this short-sleeve flag sweater from Altar’d State is a classy 4th of July outfit option.

Casual Options

Casual makes the most sense for me with my two young boys on the 4th of July. I love a reason to dress up and feel put together in a dress or preppy red, white or blue outfit, but if I’m fishing with the boys or in the mountains in Boone, I’m definitely going casual.

My favorite casual options I’ll pull from are the matching set from Lake in Navy, or the red linen pant set from Gap. Or, you’ll find me in a white tee or my favorite navy stripe tee with denim shorts.

Accessories

Accessories are where you can really make a classic outfit lean patriotic and festive. Anything red is the obvious choice. Red often comes in and out of being trendy in various shades, but for the 4th of July it’s always a yes.

Red strappy sandals like these from Amazon look good with any patriotic outfit. This Anthropology woven bag pairs with any outfit and I love this bag in particular because it’s the perfect shade of red, the size is not too big, not too small, just right. I really like that it’s a shoulder bag vs. a handbag which feels more convenient for 4th of July outings. Plus, it’s under $100!

Swim

If you’re headed to the beach, lake, or pool, pack a patriotic swimsuit. The La Blanca one-piece is my all-time favorite flattering swimsuit. It’s usually on sale, comes in lots of colors, and looks good at every single life stage (it was my postpartum go-to and I still wear it almost every time we go to the pool). The navy is a great option for the 4th, and of course, you can wear it long afterward, too. You could make it a tad more festive with my favorite Amazon coverup in white or blue.

I love stripe anything, and this stripe swimsuit is no exception. Perfect excuse for a new “patriotic” swimsuit that’s actually just classic blue and white stripe. The bow shoulder ties make it extra fun and unique.

Left on Friday makes some of my favorite swimwear and their two-pieces is one of the only ones I trust for mom life. Cute, but you’re not spending the whole day adjusting. (I did a full Left on Friday review if you want to see everything. You can see more of my favorite swimwear in my most flattering swimsuits for moms roundup.)

Obviously any suit in red, white or blue will be festive for the 4th. White swimsuits can be tricky, so maybe stick to red and blue to be safe, or if you go for a white option, make sure it’s a high-quality one, like this bikini top and bottom from Stylest or this one-piece from NYUD Swim (I own both – they’re not see through when wet).

How to Look Festive Without Looking Costumey

  • Pick 2 of the 3 colors: red, white, and blue all at once is usually too much
  • Stripes read patriotic without being literal; flag prints can work when they’re subtle
  • One festive accessory does the job; head-to-toe patriotic crosses into costume
  • Your summer staples in the right colors work better than anything bought just for the holiday
  • Thin stripes over wide ones

What to Wear on the 4th of July (FAQ)

What should women wear on the 4th of July?

Anything in red, white, or blue that you’d want to wear on a hot summer day. A striped dress, a navy linen set, white shorts with a red top. The goal is festive, not costumed.

Is it okay to wear all white on the 4th of July?

Yes, and I think it’s an underrated option. White is clean, it’s summer, and one red or navy accessory makes it feel festive enough for the holiday.TeriLyn Adams wearing white dress with cowboy boots for 4th of July oufit.

What’s the dress code for a 4th of July cookout?

There usually isn’t one. I’d aim for something casual but intentional — shorts, a dress, or a linen set. Leave the cocktail attire and the flip flops at home and you’ll be fine.

What I’m Wearing This Year

This year I’m keeping it simple. Two young boys who never stop moving means practicality has to come first, so I’m going with denim shorts, a striped tee, and my red woven bag. It’s a combination that still feels festive, and I can keep up with my kids in it.
