Denim dresses can easily go wrong and look frumpy and dated or veer into a cheesy western look. While Western is a fall trend, I find that denim dresses are the most fun when styled in unconventional ways, like pairing it with preppy elements or layering to the max. Here are nine ideas to make your denim dress look current and unexpected while still looking polished.
If you’re reading this post, I’m assuming you already own a denim dress and are just looking for style tips. But if you’re shopping for one, you don’t have to break the bank. I own two denim dresses – one is a pricey one from Frame with puff sleeves and a bold collar and another is a denim dress with pockets from Amazon (pictured above) – so it goes to show you don’t have to spend a ton to get a great denim dress. I style this look with a gorgeous chocolate bag, a thin leather belt to add some shape, and Heidi Merrick sunglasses (I just got them and obsessed is an understatement).
A denim mini or midi dress can instantly feel preppy when you layer it over a crisp polo shirt. The collar adds structure, while the short sleeves keep the look light. I especially love this look paired with loafers + socks. (Here are more tips for styling loafers with socks if that combo scares you!)
When the temps drop, a thin turtleneck layered under a denim dress is a game changer. It’s also an unexpected way to style a summery denim dress and transition a summer outfit to a fall outfit. This looks best with a sleeveless denim dress. I like pairing a striped or black turtleneck with a dark-wash denim dress with knee-high boots for an elevated but easy outfit. If I want to dress down a turtleneck outfit, I’ll pair it with ballet flats.
Swap your usual cardigan for a crisp button-down layered underneath your dress. Leave the collar peeking out for structure, then roll the sleeves over the dress straps for a relaxed finish. It’s a modern twist that works especially well with sleeveless denim dresses. Bonus points if you add a blazer over top for even more polish.
Here are other ways to style a button-down.
Ballet flats are having a major style moment, and they pair perfectly with denim dresses of all lengths. A mini dress with flats reads Parisian and chic, while a maxi or midi dress styled with ballet flats feels casual but intentional. I reach for these suede ballet flats all the time. Add ruffle socks like these (how cute!) or even sheer trouser socks if you want to lean into that unexpected fashion-girl detail.
While I love love love white sneakers (and own nine pairs), they can easily take a denim dress look and make it boring, at best, or frumpy, at worst. Sometimes sneakers are absolutely the only option (especially if chasing kids) so I find I like sneakers with midi or maxi denim dresses (which lean more elevated in the first place), but pass on pairing them with shorter denim dresses. The sneakers I wear the most with dresses are the Cariuma white leather sneakers!
If your go-to denim dress is simple, consider branching out into bold silhouettes. Look for A-line cuts, dramatic puff sleeves (I have and LOVE this puff-sleeve dress), or even a belted shirt-dress style. A denim maxi with a cinched waist like this has just the right amount of drama. Don’t shy away from experimenting–denim is classic enough to balance out the boldness.
Sometimes the easiest way to update a denim dress is to throw a jacket over it. A cropped leather jacket adds edge, while a plaid blazer or classic trench coat leans into polished preppy. Even an oversized cardigan can shift the vibe from casual to cozy. When in doubt, let your jacket be the star of the outfit. (If you want more tips on outfits to style with blazers, check out this post.)
If the denim dress itself is super simple, you can let your accessories do the heavy lifting. Gold jewelry, a woven belt, or a stack of bangles will easily elevate your outfit. The trick is leaning into excess with intention so it feels playful, not sloppy. I paired my Amazon denim dress with this gorgeous chocolate bag, a thin leather belt to add some shape, and Heidi Merrick sunglasses.
One of the most modern updates? Socks styled with flats or loafers. It’s a little quirky, a little playful, and it makes your denim dress look fashion-forward without trying too hard. Pair white ankle socks with Mary Janes or sheer socks with slingbacks to keep the look intentional.
A denim dress doesn’t have to feel dated–it can be one of the most versatile pieces in your closet. With the right layers, accessories, and footwear, you can take it from casual errands to elegant evenings out. The key is styling it in a way that feels true to your personal style while keeping the look fresh.
