If there’s one piece I always reach for when I want to feel polished but not fussy, it’s a button-down shirt (it’s a staple for my wardrobe as a woman in my 40s). Whether I’m running errands, heading to the office, or just chasing my two boys, a crisp or relaxed button-down is one of the most versatile staples I can own. It seems simple but it can actually be a very versatile piece with just a few twekas.

Here are 10 timeless yet perhaps unexpected ways to wear it.

How to Style a Button-Down – 10 Ways Beyond the Basics

1. Fully Tucked into Jeans and Belted

This is the easiest way to make a simple button-down feel intentional. It defines the waist and works well with high-waisted jeans, especially when you finish the look with heels or boots. I actually just shot photos in this exact outfit for a brand partnership – this Frank & Eileen button-down, Paige high-waisted flare jeans, and classic leather belt. Don’t forget to throw on some fun jewelry! See me wearing this whole button-down look here.

Here’s a roundup of what shoes to style (and how) with flare jeans!

2. As a Light Layer Over a Tank

Leave it unbuttoned and cuff the sleeves—this is a great summer look with denim shorts (my favorites here) or wide-leg jeans (more styling tips here). It gives that effortless, cool-mom vibe and feels more unexpected than a basic tee with denim shorts. It’s also great when the AC is blasting and I need an extra layer inside.

3. Half Tucked into Jeans

A half tuck (usually in the front) adds some shape while still feeling relaxed. This isn’t the millennial favorite half tuck, but instead a French tuck where one panel of the button-down is unbuttoned and drapes out. This looks especially great with these boyfriend jeans or my favorite straight-leg jeans. (If you’re on the hunt for a good pair of jeans, these are my favorite jeans .)

4. Semi Buttoned

Button just the middle few buttons and tuck or tie the hem. This style works beautifully with high-waisted jeans, linen trousers, or flowy skirts. It gives the look of intentional ease—you get a little shape without committing to a full tuck. I also find this style a little more feminine and playful.

5. Make It a Dress

If it’s long enough, wear it solo with tall boots or over biker shorts (these are my go-to biker shorts to wear under dresses). I love my Amazon button-down dress for this. Add a belt if you want more structure. I styled this exact button-down look here.

6. Paired with Shorts

A crisp button-down balances the casual vibe of denim or linen shorts. This untuckable button-down is my favorite to pair with tailored shorts. Leave it untucked or do a half tuck for some interest, and accessorize with your favorite jewelry!

7. As a Matching Linen Set

A linen button-down paired with matching linen pants or shorts is everywhere this season—and for good reason. They’re elevated but breezy. I’ve got you covered with how to style linen pants here if you’re curious!

Frank & Eileen carries some my favorite linen pieces, and honestly, all of their clothes are amazing– I did a blog post on my favorite Frank & Eileen pieces here.

8. With Anything but Boring Tapered Work Trousers

You may think the most boring way to style a button-down is with work trousers, but I actually find more fun than most other ways since there are so many interesting work trousers these days. Try it with wide-leg or pleated trousers (or even these trouser jeans are so fun) to keep the look modern and not stuffy. Grab one of my faovrite work totes – and some fun jewelry! A pointy toe flat keeps the look feminine and modern.

9. Layered Under a Sweater or Blazer

Preppy style is back, and so is layering a button-down under a sweater. I like layering a striped sweater, like one from Jenni Kayne, over a striped button-down for something unexpected. You can also try it try it under a sweater vest or oversized blazer.

10. Tied at the Waist Over a Dress or Skirt

This is a go-to when you want more waist definition or just need a lightweight layer. It instantly adds structure to flowy pieces.

Focus on the styling: unbutton the top few buttons, roll up the sleeves to show some forearm, and add dainty jewelry. Tucking it in or tying it also creates shape and defines the waist.

Another tip: go for a chunky necklace. When I start to feel more blah than chic, a bold chunky necklace with a collared shirt always helps.

Final Thoughts

A great button-down is the kind of piece that can do it all. Whether you dress it up for work or throw it on over a tank on the weekend, it’s a wardrobe essential that keeps proving itself. If you’re looking to add one to your rotation (or just want to refresh how you wear it), I hope this post gave you some inspiration—and a few good outfit combos to try next.
