Finding the right face moisturizer for dry, aging skin can feel overwhelming, especially when luxury creams like La Mer and Augustinus Bader dominate the conversation. They’re everywhere, they’re expensive, and they promise miraculous results. But, not only do they cost literally hundreds of dollars, they don’t use clean ingredients.
This guide focuses on non-toxic, well-formulated moisturizers that support hydration, the skin barrier, and visible signs of aging – without relying on hype or luxury pricing.
As skin ages, it naturally produces less oil, the skin barrier weakens, and moisture loss becomes more noticeable. Fine lines look deeper, makeup doesn’t sit as well, and dryness can suddenly feel constant. The solution isn’t more products – it’s finding the right moisturizer with the right ingredients, ideally one that works both morning and night.
Here are my quick top picks, with more details below:
If you’re looking for one moisturizer that truly works for both AM and PM, this is the best place to start.
Oliveda F74 is different from most creams because it’s waterless; instead of using water as a base, like most skincare brands, Oliveda uses olive leaf cell elixir as the base of its products. Read my full F74 review here, and see below for the highlight reel.
My take: Oliveda F74 is best for dry, sensitive, and mature skin, especially if your skin barrier feels compromised and reacts to almost everything. It layers beautifully under SPF and makeup in the morning, yet still feels rich enough to repair and hydrate skin overnight. If you like the idea of La Mer but want a cleaner formula with real skin benefits, F74 is the better non-toxic alternative.

U Beauty’s Super Hydrator is a good option if your skin needs overnight moisture and barrier repair, but you don’t want something overly heavy or active-rich.
This cream focuses more on hydration and skin barrier support than aggressive anti-aging, which makes it a solid choice for nighttime use, especially if your skin is easily overwhelmed.
My take: U Beauty’s Super Hydrator is best suited for dehydrated skin, early signs of aging, and anyone looking for a solid nighttime moisture boost. It’s rich and comforting at night – my skin felt more hydrated and balanced by morning – but personally, it was too heavy for me to layer comfortably under SPF and makeup during the day. If you’re sensitive to fragrance or prefer truly fragrance-free formulas, this may not be the best fit. It’s a good overnight option but not the one I’d choose if you’re looking for a single moisturizer that works seamlessly for both AM and PM.
True Botanicals Chebula Extreme Skin Barrier Cream is best if you want a luxury, plant-forward moisturizer with intense moisture and skin barrier support. It’s designed to deeply hydrate while addressing multiple signs of aging, using antioxidant-rich botanical actives to help improve skin texture, soften the look of fine lines, and give you an overall glow. Over time, it can also help improve your skin barrier, which in turn will reduce dryness and sensitivity.
My take: True Botanicals Chebula Extreme Skin Barrier Cream feels like the most high-end option in this lineup. The packaging alone is beautiful and definitely gives it that luxury feel, and texture is rich and absorbs easily. I found it a bit too heavy to comfortably use both day and night, but it’s certainly hydrating and works very well as an overnight cream. If you enjoy a richer texture and want something that feels indulgent at night, this is a great option, especially if a luxury experience matters to you as much as performance.

If you want a non-toxic moisturizer under $50 that still does the job, DIME’s TBT Cream is a strong option. It’s lightweight and comfortable, especially for everyday wear.
My take: DIME TBT Cream is a solid option for normal-to-dry skin and more budget-conscious routines. It works well under SPF in the morning and layers nicely over a serum at night, but on my skin, it wasn’t quite hydrating enough, especially as dryness and skin changes have become more noticeable in my 40s. That said, if you’re on the younger end of the anti-aging spectrum or don’t need intensive repair, this can work beautifully as an affordable, everyday moisturizer.

Crunchi’s Nightlight Advanced Facial Cream stands out for its rigorous third-party testing, which makes it appealing if you prioritize ingredient safety above everything else. Crunchi is one of the very best in the beauty industry for rigorous third-party testing and conservative formulation standards, and their products work especially well for sensitive or reactive skin. This is a richer cream designed for nighttime use, especially for skin that feels thinner, drier, or more reactive with age.
My take: Crunchi Nightlight Advanced Facial Cream is best for mature skin, dryness, and the hormonal skin changes that often show up as we age – and it’s the option I’d point you to first if non-toxic ingredients and safety are your top priorities. It’s definitely suited more for a night cream than a day cream since it feels heavy under makeup.

These are still good products, but they ultimately didn’t earn a permanent spot in the top five for very specific reasons.
This is a beautifully formulated, treatment-level night cream and one of the better non-toxic alternatives in the luxury category. But, it didn’t make the top five becuase of one thing: scent. While it’s non-toxic, it has a noticeable natural fragrance that stands out compared to the other options on this list, which are fragrance-free or extremely mild. For readers with sensitive or reactive skin, scent can be a dealbreaker, so I ultimately prioritized creams that are easier for more people to tolerate daily.
This is still a solid option for anti-aging and peptide support (and it was my go-to for most of my 30s), but compared to the other moisturizers in this guide, I didn’t find it as hydrating, especially for truly dry or aging skin. Additionally, Counter’s product availability has been inconsistent in recent years (here’s what happened to Beautycounter), which makes it harder to confidently recommend as a go-to staple. When I’m choosing top picks, reliability matters just as much as formulation. Here’s more on the (beauty) Counter relaunch.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here’s the simplest way to choose.
You want one moisturizer that works for both AM and PM
* Best overall choice
Your top concern is wrinkles, firmness, and overnight repair
* Best anti-aging night cream
You want a simple, effective night moisturizer
You want a clean, peptide-rich night cream
You want a non-toxic, budget-friendly daily moisturizer
If you want to keep things simple, Oliveda F74 alone is enough for most people.
If you’re open to an AM/PM routine, the most well-rounded pairing is:
That combination covers hydration, barrier repair, and signs of aging – it’s the combo I use.

Seriously cannot live without h the no. 1 facial oil and the cleansing balm. And of course, the entire countertime line is so, so moisturizing!!!
AMEN to all that!! Glad you love them too!!
TeriLyn,
I’ve been a reader of your blog for a long time-since your Boston running blogs!
As a cost-conscious shopper, what would be the skincare step you would never skip and most economical serum/toner/oil? I read all these posts and I can’t imagine spending this much on my skin. I splurged on a BC Vit C serum a while back that was $90! Can you please write a post on quality skin care on a budget? Thanks!!
Hi! Taking care of my skin is a top priority for me so I’m willing to invest in higher quality skincare but I know that’s not what everyone wants to spend. Check out my DIME review! It’s a great option that’s budget friendly. I will say that Oliveda products last a long time since you use a small amount! So while they’re pricey, they last a long time.
I would never skip a good serum and good moisturizer! Skimp on cleanser/toner but still use them! 🙂
That’s amazing to hear! It’s so encouraging to know that even with dry skin, it’s possible to find the right combination of products and routines that make a difference. I’d love to hear what your skincare secret is—40 and glowing skin is definitely something to aspire to!
Hi! I am new to your blog and using Oliveda. I instantly fell in love with it and signed up to be a consultant almost immediately. If I am being honest the discount sounded really nice, and I thought after a few months the results would in on my face, and everyone would want to know what I was doing. However, I have seemed to have wrecked my skin barrier. It is bad so I stopped everything and went back to some products I had before Oliveda. I want to continue with Oliveada but feel like I dont know enough about the products to know how to move forward. I would love any help you can give or offer! Thank you so much!
Hi Allyson! I’m so sorry to hear that. I may be able to help you figure out what the issue is if you don’t mind sending me the products you were using and explaining your skin type a bit. Please email [email protected] and I’ll reply there. Usually that happens when people start using too many products at once rather than gradually introducing them since they are quite potent.
