It seems like so many of my readers are pregnant this fall, and I am so excited for all of you! I shared this blog post last year when I was in my third trimester of pregnancy, and I decided it’d be helpful to update it and republish for those of you who are currently shopping for maternity clothes.
I know very well how challenging it can be to find clothes that are 1. comfortable and 2. cute and on trend and 3. don’t break the bank. I’ve always preferred to get all the way ready in “real” clothes, even though I’ve worked from home for years. While I like athleisure outfits here and there, I opt for real clothes more often than loungewear (however, I did find some great maternity workout clothes from Amazon, and specifically the best leggings ever). But when I had a growing bump – not to mention a busy toddler who needed me constantly (still does, and I love it) – my clothes needed to be comfortable. It was a non-negotiable by my third trimester. If you’re shopping for jeans too, I have you covered in this maternity jeans roundup.
I know so many expectant moms feel the same way. Very few are willing to spend a ton of money on maternity clothes, knowing they just won’t be worn long. So, I did the heavy lifting for you and found the best affordable maternity clothes. The majority of the things I shared below are not actually maternity-specific (which I’ve found can really limit things in terms of cuteness) but actually very bump-friendly. Hopefully, you’ll be able to wear a lot of these pieces long after your baby arrives.
Everything below is from Amazon.com. Amazon is my go-to for things of this nature because I love the prices, the Prime shipping is awesome, and I know I can easily return anything that doesn’t work. Somehow, ordering stuff on Amazon doesn’t feel like real shopping to me (oops). (I also have an entire blog post dedicated to maternity workout gear from Amazon if you’re looking for pregnancy activewear.) And if you need some good shoes too, read my post about the best shoes for pregnancy.
Anyway, I hope today’s blog post is helpful for any expectant mommas out there!
Sweater dresses are a great maternity option in general because they’re stretchy and forgiving. While this turtleneck tunic-style dress is not technically true maternity, it’s the perfect option for the fall and winter with a growing bump. I have a small size, and it still worked in my third trimester, so it’s a total winner. I love the navy colorway because it looks very high-end (exactly like a $200+ dress I got from Revolve last year), but this dress comes in a ton of other colors as well.
I’m 5’1″, however. So keep that in mind when thinking through the length if you’re taller than me! It’s on the short side already, so I’d say this is best for petite ladies, or if you’re taller, you could wear it like a tunic top.
This denim button down mini dress is another non-maternity dress that I wore throughout the entire fall with a bump. It’s one of my favorite Amazon finds to date. It’s so stinking cute, fits loose and comfortably, and has feminine sleeve details. In NC, the warm weather lasts a while, so it’s not crazy to order something like this to wear throughout November. I got a size extra-small and it still worked in my third trimester.
This black square-neck dress is unbelievably flattering and comfortable in person. While I’ve never tried Skims dresses before, it looks exactly like the Soft Lounge Long Sleeve Dress. It was too long on me (I’m 5’1″), but it would be the ideal date night dress for anyone a little taller.
I’m sharing a photo of it on me, but just note that I had the hem folded under. I was wearing a size small, which fit perfectly other than the length. It’s stretchy, so I feel confident that the same size will work as your bump grows.
I own both the brown and black versions of this sleeveless sweater dress. I wore it with my first pregnancy, in between pregnancies, and then again with my second. I don’t typically wear something from Amazon year after year, but this is one of the exceptions. It’s very well-made!
It’s truly a great basic tank dress that can be styled many ways. I especially love it styled with a blazer for a work appropriate outfit. The blazer I’m wearing below is another Amazon find! I have a size XS in the dress and size XS in the blazer.
I found this sweetheart neckline sweater dress last year and never ended up ordering it, but I hope one of you does! This is another non-maternity specific option that would easily work with a bump and then again once baby arrives. The neckline cut is so tastefully sexy and feminine, but the sweater material gives it a conservative feel as well.
This orange oversized tunic looks very similar to the navy dress at the top of this post, but I think it would work best as a top with leggings.
Having a few different sweaters is a nice option while pregnant since many of your current sweaters won’t cover your bump all the way as you grow! This oversized knit pullover is a great option.
When I wanted to feel a little more cute than sporty, I opted for this knit quarter zip with leggings and fashion sneakers. It’s similar to the beige pullover above, but this is a little more polished while the other is more athletic.
This grey mockneck sweatshirt feels more chic than a regular sweatshirt because of the neckline. I still love this now that I’m not pregnant. Something about the mockneck feels cool and sporty, and it looks a lot like this Isabel Marant sweatshirt that’s close to $500.
This oversized half-zip pullover is similar to the sweater above but more of a traditional sweatshirt. I preferred this pullover when I was wearing leggings (my favorite Amazon leggings also worked while pregnant) because it’s a little sportier and the material is warmer. This feels much more expensive than it is – and it’s so affordable. I wore a small size in beige.
This cropped pullover from Amazon is one that I did order in a size up. I had read to size up in general for a more Lululemon like fit, so I went up a full two sizes to work with my 36 week bump. A small would have worked well for the majority of the fall, though. At 38 1/2 weeks, it was a tiny bit short but with a black tank underneath and paired with black leggings, you couldn’t tell.
The leggings I loved the most are HeyNuts and I’ve shared them hundreds of times (they’re still my #1 while not pregnant). They are 90% as good as Lululemon Align leggings, they don’t fade at all, and they come in a ton of fun colors. The waistband worked on my bump until about 35 weeks, where it started to slip. Pretty impressive. I recommend these to everyone: pregnant or not.
I needed to order a new jacket for the end of my pregnancy because none of mine would zip. And thank goodness I did! The temperatures dropped pretty low, and I was so glad I had a coat that would zip over my bump. Again, in the name of not spending a ton of money, I ordered a puffer coat from Amazon and just sized up.
I got this white quilted oversized puffer with a hood for under $100. I sized up to a small and it zipped over my bump just perfectly.
This oversized cardigan was one of my favorite winter purchases last year. It was SO comfortable and the material felt very expensive. I loved the dark green color, and it worked perfectly with a bump. Since it’s oversized, you don’t need to size up. You could easily size down in this, even pregnant. I wore an XS.
Relaxed cardigans will also be your best friend. Thankfully, cardigans are super popular these days, and you can find them in a ton of fits/colors/and patterns. Not only do they work well as a top on their own when buttoned up, but if your bump begins to outgrow them, you can still style them unbuttoned with a tank or tee underneath. I wore this striped cardigan from Amazon most often.

I just love your health conscious outlook and all the great looks you provide for inspiration! Something to consider that is important for the health of the planet and those workers, including children, in textile factories, is the negative impact of fast fashion. It would be great to see more visibility about sustainable and fair trade fashion on your blog.
Thanks again for the great content!
