Ah, the joys of aging skin. Fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and uneven skin tone–you name it. I turned 40 this past year, and while I have a very robust skincare routine and happen to think my skin looks really good, I’ve noticed recently that at-home skincare devices have made a massive difference in my overall complexion. While topical skincare is crucial (and I’ll preach this all day), at-home devices can take your routine to the next level by stimulating collagen, improving circulation, and enhancing product absorption.
As a self-proclaimed skincare junkie, I’ve ordered my fair share of skincare devices, so today, I’m breaking down the best options for aging skin– from red light therapy masks to microcurrent devices– so you can build a high-tech skincare routine that actually works.
Microcurrent devices use low-level electrical currents to stimulate facial muscles, improving tone and reducing fine lines. The ZIIP Halo is my top pick (of all skincare devices!) because of its smart app-controlled treatments and conductive gel that actually enhances results. It’s great for lifting sagging skin and defining facial contours. I notice an immediate difference in how lifted and smooth my face is after I use it, and it looks even better the next day. Consistency is the name of the game with this one, but I enjoy using it so I’m pretty good about using it 3-4x a week.
Microdermabrasion devices help exfoliate the skin by using a fine abrasive tip and suction to remove dead skin cells. This process can smooth skin texture, reduce hyperpigmentation, and promote collagen production. Look for FDA-cleared options that offer customizable settings for at-home use. The PMD Personal Microderm Classic is the microdermabrasion device I have. It uses spinning discs to gently remove dead skin cells which gives me a brighter, smoother complexion. It also has a vacuum suction system that unclogs pores at the same time, which helps your skin absorb skincare products more effectively. PMD recently launched the “Pro” version of this tool, which has additional speed and disc options if you want a tool that allows you to choose between sensitive and intense.

Red light therapy is known to boost collagen, improve elasticity, and even out skin tone. I was gifted the Boncharge Red Light Therapy Mask and love it. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and promotes a more even skin tone. I use this for 10 minutes a day in the morning (and I LOVE that it’s cordless).
If you struggle with acne, opt for a blue light therapy mask (like this from Omnilux) instead. It kills acne-causing bacteria and helps reduce breakouts.
RF devices stimulate collagen production and tighten skin using heat energy. The NEWA is one of the most effective at-home RF devices, especially for firming sagging skin around the jawline and cheeks. It uses clinical-grade radio frequency technology to help the skin renew its collagen and elastin production, two proteins responsible for firmness and elasticity. I’ve had the NEWA for a few months now, but I’ve only used it once since I’m not confident it’s breastfeeding-safe (and the other tools I’m more comfortable using while nursing) so I’m holding off on more regular use for now.
The Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand is a great option if you want a lot of bang for your buck. It combines microcurrent, red light therapy, and massage in one tool, making it perfect for someone who wants an all-in-one device. It’s particularly great for those dealing with fine lines, dull skin, and puffiness. I gifted this to a few friends this past Christmas since it’s such a fun product to use. It’s small, so it’s easy to pack in your travel bag as well.
Facial rollers improve circulation, reduce puffiness, and enhance lymphatic drainage. While jade and rose quartz rollers are popular and affordable, the quality of the roller mechanism matters more than the stone itself—many Amazon rollers break easily, so invest in a well-made one. My very favorite option is the Skinny Confidential Face Massager. The weight of the balls makes a huge difference. You can use code TERILYN15 for 15% off if you order directly from Skinny Confidential, but you can also order on Amazon.
A few other options:
Gua sha is an ancient healing technique within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that works with the skin to sculpt and rejuvenate. It also helps with lymphatic drainage in the face. I love this Primally Pure Gua Sha Tool because it has ridges that create light friction movements across signs of aging like fine lines and discoloration. This Amazon Gua Sha Tool is a super affordable option if you want to try facial massage for the first time.
Gua sha body tools help with lymphatic drainage. They mostly perform the same, but I have my eye on The Body Sculptor by The Skinny Confidential for body massage now that I know how great that brand is. You can use code TERILYN15 for 15% off if you order directly from Skinny Confidential, but you can also order the body sculptor on Amazon.
Dry brushing is fantastic for exfoliation and circulation. I like The Skinny Confidential Dry Brush, but honestly, they all work the same. You can use code TERILYN15 for 15% off if you order directly from Skinny Confidential, but you can also order on Amazon.
Here are a few more affordable options:
Cryotherapy tools help reduce puffiness and inflammation. My go-to is The Skinny Confidential Ice Roller—it’s durable, unlike Amazon ice rollers, which tend to break easily. Cooling globes seem too high maintenance to me, as they’re prone to breaking and don’t glide as easily. Order the SC ice roller on Amazon, or buy directly from Skinny Confidential and save 15% with code TERILYN15.
Here are a few affordable options if you’re not ready to invest in the Skinny Confidential Ice Roller:
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices are used for hair removal and reducing hair growth over time, but the results vary depending on your skin type and hair color. While there are some at-home IPL devices on the market, they usually give you less dramatic results compared to professional treatments. Most people will also need multiple sessions to see noticeable hair reduction. I have the INNZA Laser Hair Removal machine from Amazon. My friend recommended it to me and absolutely loves it!
Dermaplaning is essentially shaving your face. It removes peach fuzz and dead skin cells. While I’m too nervous to try it at home, the Dermaflash Luxe has a cult following. It uses sonic technology to safely and gently exfoliate dead skin cells and remove peach fuzz. It’s proven to ensure that your facial hair doesn’t grow back thicker or faster, and it works on all skin types, including sensitive skin.
There are a few more manual, affordable options for dermaplaning too:
Skincare devices can be game-changers when used consistently. You won’t see permanent results after one use with any skincare device, but consistent use produces the best results. Whether you’re looking to firm your skin, reduce fine lines, or improve product absorption, investing in the right tools can elevate your at-home skincare routine. Stick with FDA-cleared, dermatologist-recommended devices, and focus on consistency to see long-term results.
I own a lot of skincare devices, but my very favorite has to be the ZIIP Halo. I feel like I see results from it the fastest out of everything!

I love light therapy. First used it when my orthopedist recommended it for my back and nerve problems after Covid and now love my red light mask for the face- both blue and green also get used for acne prone teen.
Ooh I didn’t think about it for my back pain. I really want a red light sauna!
