Winter is HERE! Which means the obvious: soup weather, cozy clothes, and dry skin. Cold weather causes the skin to dry faster, which can lead to a whole host of other issues. And now that I have a 14 month old, I also need to keep an eye on his skin so it doesn’t get too dry or irritated.
As a new mom, knowing what was in my baby products really mattered to me. I didn’t want to be careless about the ingredients on his skin and I wanted to make sure I felt great about everything I was using. Of course, my first thought for safe baby products was Beautycounter since I love their dedication to safety. I’ve been using Beautycounter for over five years for my skincare and makeup (even when pregnant). In the winter months, I especially love their night supreme cream and the cleansing balm for soothing my dry skin.
But, unfortunately, when it came to choosing baby products for my son, Beautycounter doesn’t have many options. However, they DO have the Baby Daily Protective Balm (it was just recently renamed to Balm For All), so I ordered it when I was adding things to our baby registry.
The short story: I like it but I don’t love it. My top pick is Primally Pure Baby Balm. More details on all that below!
First, let’s go over the high level details of what makes Beautycounter’s Baby Balm special. The biggest thing for me is that I know if I’m buying Beautycounter, all the ingredients are safe. That’s why I wish they had a more extensive baby and kids line. Here’s a quick overview of their baby balm ingredients, which I feel much better about than petroleum-based balms like Aquaphor or Vaseline.
Beautycounter’s Baby Balm is formulated with organic shea butter, sunflower seed oil, and jojoba seed oil.
Organic Shea Butter – This is super soothing and creates a barrier for your baby’s skin.
Sunflower Oil – Sunflower oil contains linoleic acid which helps your baby’s skin retain moisture.
Jojoba Seed Oil – Jojoba oil is soothing oil with anti-inflammatory properties, it’s super moisturizing, and is a natural antimicrobial.
All of these ingredients are also great for you, mom! Since I keep one of these in my diaper bag, it’s easy (and safe) to use on dry lips, any cracked or dry spots on my hands, or when I have a blister/scab that needs ointment.
You can use this balm on practically anything, but I like it most for any dry spots Thomas gets, like his cheeks, knees and elbows. I just put a little on my finger, and then gently rub it onto the spot that needs it.
Another great thing about this balm is that it’s not just for babies. It’s safe enough FOR babies, of course, but I like to use it as a healing ointment instead of aquaphor. It’s great on dry cuticles, especially in the winter.
I don’t have any tattoos, but I’ve heard this is a great product if you do have them.
Like I mentioned, I love that it’s Beautycounter. I know the brand super well, I can trust that all of the ingredients are safe, and I LOVE that I get a great discount on it since I’m a consultant! I also love how hydrating it is. You can’t argue that.
It’s $22 for 2 oz so slightly less than the Primally Pure Baby Balm.
After you’ve had it for a while, it seems to get a little stiff and can be hard to get out of the squeeze tube packaging. And that can be a challenge while wrangling a baby. Additionally, it does have a slight scent that I don’t love. But that is totally personal preference.
Primally Pure Baby Balm is our favorite and we buy it rather than the Beautycounter baby balm. It comes in a jar so it’s easy to get out, and you can order it in two different sizes. The texture is MUCH smoother than Beautycounter’s. It’s incredibly smooth and thick but still applies easily. It’s also less greasy than Beautycounter’s, but that isn’t a big deal with either option since we apply it right before his PJs and occasionally throughout the day on his cheeks. I also trust Primally Pure’s commitment to safety and trust all their ingredients.
Their two ounce container is $30.
I’ve been using Primally Pure products for years now, and while I use Beautycounter products more often (since they simply have more), there are a handful of Primally Pure items I use daily as well. (I also use their Plumping Mist) Both brands are super safe, and only contain clean ingredients, so you can feel good about either option.
