My husband is 41. My dad is 85. Shopping for Father’s Day in my house means switching between two completely different brains.

They’re both nearly impossible to shop for. Tommy will just buy whatever he wants the second he wants it. My dad insists he doesn’t need anything, ever, for any occasion. But somehow every year I’ve managed to find gifts they actually love and actually use.

I feel like there’s a sweet spot when you stop trying to be clever and just give them something thoughtful that fits their life right now. So I rounded up the best gifts I’ve given over the years, plus what I’m getting both of them this year. If the dad you’re shopping for is anywhere from 40 to 90, you should be covered.

The short story: Skip the “World’s Best Dad” mug. The gifts dads actually use tend to be the practical ones, i.e., the wallet they’ll carry for ten years or the pullover that becomes their go-to. Everything below is something I’ve tested or bought.

Unique Father’s Day Gifts

Father’s Day Gifts Under $25

1. Changeable Art Frame – This is one of those gifts that surprised me. You swap in your kid’s artwork, which is personal and adorable.

2. Bombas Socks – Boring? Maybe. But every dad I know is wearing the same threadbare socks from 2014. These hold up and feel like a small luxury. Pair it with another small gift.

3. Golf Ball Whiskey Chillers – If he’s into golf or whiskey, this is an easy win.

4. Grilling Rub Set – A nice spice rub set for the dads who love to grill is hard to beat… and you’ll all get to enjoy it.

Father’s Day Gifts Under $50

5. Vuori Men’s Shorts – These are the shorts upgrade he won’t buy himself. Tommy lives in his. They look polished enough for a casual dinner out but still feel like the ones he’d wear to workout or coach soccer practice. Around $48-68, but you get 20% off your first order.

6. Duckhead Circle Patch Hat – I love Duckhead for casual gifts. The hat looks great broken in and Tommy gets compliments on it all the time.

7. Yeti Tumbler – Is it just me, or does every single guy you know carry a Yeti tumbler or have one in his car? The 20oz holds coffee for hours, and the powder coat doesn’t scratch the way the older ones did. Get it monogrammed or put their favorite sports team on there if you have time.

8. A Really Good Grill Set – Skip the giant 18-piece BBQ toolkit. Just get two or three pieces that are actually nice. We both use these three tools I got him weekly.

Father’s Day Gifts Under $100

9. Tecovas Wallet – I got this for Tommy a few years ago, and he loved the classic style. He’s used it for three years now, and it only gets better with wear. The leather softens and gets that perfect lived-in look.

10. Duckhead Pullover – Both brands make pullovers that hit the sweet spot between athletic and grown-up. Tommy has so many Duckhead pullovers and wears them all the time. This is a little over $100, but worth it.

11. Leather Dopp Kit – Every dad has a sad zip-top toiletry bag from the early 2000s. I got Tommy a leather one from Tecovas (of course), and he’ll have it forever.

12. Storyworth – This is one of my favorite gifts I’ve ever given my dad. It’s so special and just as much a gift for our kids, who are learning so much about their grandparents through it. Storyworth sends your dad a weekly prompt like “What was your first job?” or “How did you meet Mom?” He just replies to the email (no login, no app, nothing technical), and at the end of the year, you get a beautiful hardcover book of all his stories. It’s not cheap, but it’s the kind of gift that turns into a family heirloom.

Father’s Day Gifts Worth the Splurge

13. APL Sneakers – I got Tommy a pair of these for Christmas last year, and he’s since bought himself two more pairs because he loves the style and how comfortable they are. The TechLoom Pro is the one to start with. They look sharp with shorts or jeans, and he wears them everywhere.

14. Skylight Frame – I gave my parents a Skylight a couple of years ago, and everyone loves it. You email photos to a unique address, and they pop up on his frame instantly, so my dad gets new pictures of the grandkids constantly without having to figure out anything tech-related. It’s a great one to share with siblings too, since anyone with access can upload. For a dad who lives far away or just doesn’t see his grandkids enough, this is the gift.

15. Theragun – Another one of those gifts that blesses the whole family. We use it more than we’d like to admit! I got a Theragun for my father-in-law, who is a golf professional, and he loves it.

16. Holderness & Bourne Wallace Hoodie – Tommy owns the Wallace Hoodie Sweater in three colors and wears them all on rotation. They’re lightweight, structured, and fitted enough that they don’t interfere with his swing on the course, but they look polished enough that he wears them out to dinner. The Lawson Hoodie is great for layering too. If your dad plays golf, anything Holderness & Bourne is a safe bet.

What I’m Getting My Husband This Year

Tommy is probably getting another pair of APL sneakers, and I’ll throw in his favorite socks to go with that.

I’m also throwing in a car detailing appointment because his car is currently a hot mess of who knows what.

What I’m Getting My 85-Year-Old Dad This Year

I already did Storyworth a few years ago and Skylight a couple of Christmases back, so this year I’m keeping it simple. He loves anything with the grandkids, so the Changeable Art Frames with the boys’ one-of-a-kind artwork feels like the winner this year.

Last-Minute Father’s Day Gift Ideas

If you forgot, you forgot. These all work even if you’re shopping the day before.

17. Audible Gift Membership – $15 a month, and you can buy a 3, 6, or 12-month gift card. Great for dads who drive a lot or want to “read more” but never do.

18. Car Detailing – Tommy loves a clean car. He used to go to the car wash and vacuum it religiously. With two kids and an insane work schedule, that hasn’t happened in months. So while he was golfing one weekend, I had a mobile detailer come to our house. That thing looked brand new inside.

19. Storyworth or Skylight – Both can be set up online in five minutes, and you can print a card to give him on the day. No shipping required.

20. A Local Experience – Golf lesson, bourbon tasting, concert tickets. Pick something you know he’d actually do, not something you think he should do.

If you want more ideas, I also have a Mother’s Day gift guide (I did something similar there), gift ideas for people who have everything, gifts for parents, and a boyfriend and husband gift guide you can pull from.

Final Thoughts

The thing I’ve learned shopping for both Tommy and my dad is that the gifts that land are the ones that fit into their daily life. Not the big flashy thing. The wallet they pull out every day or the pullover they grab on the way out the door. We must remember, men are practical 😉

So if you’re stuck, pick the thing that solves a small problem or replaces something he’s been using for too long. That’s almost always the winner.

Alright, I’ll wrap this up and go finish wrapping Tommy’s box. If you have a great Father’s Day gift idea I missed, drop it in the comments. I’m always adding to the list.
