Each week on my Instagram account, I do a question box to help people shop for specific things and far and away the most requested things the last few weeks is fall wedding guest dresses. I hope this post helps you find something you love and something that you can wear more than once! As someone who doesn’t attend weddings super often, I’m always wishing I had a reason to wear the dresses I find, so I hope this helps you!
I ordered a handful of these myself to try on for you, and you’ll see those in the video below. Or, if you prefer, you can watch the video on YouTube here.
I’m including a mix of formal and cocktail style dresses below for a wide range of wedding dress codes, but you can read about all the different wedding attire and when to wear what in my What to Wear to a Wedding blog post.
I ordered this beautiful purple dress in hopes that I wouldn’t like it because it was quite expensive. Unfortunately I love it, ha! This Kika Vargas strapless babydoll dress is by far one of the most beautiful dresses I’ve ever owned. I ordered my true size and it fits perfectly, even with a growing baby bump.
I bought this floral chiffon dress from the Nordstrom sale this summer and I’ve been wishing I had a wedding to wear it to. The high neck makes this the ideal dress for an updo, and I love that you can show off strappy heels with this length. While you could easily dress this down and wear it to church, it’s also perfectly appropriate for a formal wedding!
I had to add a fun one to the top of this post. I LOVE this magenta tiered midi dress. The color is a great option for fall, and the material has a shiny organza-like fabric that makes this look extra dressy. The ruffled shoulder straps add a nice feminine touch, and the midi length is a perfect option for styling with strappy heels. The best part about this dress is that it’s under $70!
If you have a cocktail attire wedding to attend this fall, PLEASE wear this black sheer organza dress. I saw someone wear the designer version of this dress to a wedding last fall and I’ve loved it ever since then. The organza outer layer gives this dress a ton of interest and shape, while the inside layer is still flattering and fitted. I love the big flutter shoulders too. I’d pair this with black strappy heels, small diamond studs, and a black clutch. You could also wear fun colored accessories, but I think the dress does enough on it’s own. This is under $90!
I LOVE this long sleeve mini dress from Petal and Pup. The color is so bright and happy, but the long sleeves make it a great option for fall! Honestly, this works for most seasons (other than the dead of winter). I have a size XS and it fits true to size!
Yet another organza find! It must be trending this season, ha! I posted this Banana Republic Factory maxi dress on my Instagram stories recently and have already had a friend tell me she bought and LOVES this. The colors and patterns are such a unique, tasteful combination, but it’s also fun and a little funky. The most impressive part is that it’s currently marked down to $48! I’d style this dress with nude strappy heels and a nude clutch.
If you’re looking for something a little sexier, this satin halter midi dress is the perfect fall wedding guest dress that’s still taste. I love the berry color (especially for fall), and asymmetric high round neckline with gathered pleat details. This neckline definitely calls for an updo. You could do either nude or black heels. This is under $100 too!
I LOVE the color combination of this halter dress from Tuckernuck. I feel like I rarely see blue and brown together like this, but it’s such a tasteful combo. If you have a growing bump (like me), a dress like this with a relaxed silhouette will be your best bet for sizing purposes.
This black maxi dress from Tuckernuck is another great option for maternity. The bodice has comfortable smocking (with hook and eyelet closures for easy breastfeeding!!!), but the skirt is flowy and roomy, which always makes us feel more comfortable. I love that it’s black because it can easily be worn in a more formal setting.
I love a mini dress moment like this mock neck lace shift dress. How fun would this be to wear with strappy heels. It’s under $100 but looks like it could be designer, and the material can be worn all the way into winter.
This is another option under $100 but slightly more casual! If you’re attending a fall wedding that you know isn’t going to be super formal, then this tiered mini dress would be a perfect choice. You could also wear it for the rest of the fall to church or any other nicer function. The red and blue color combination is fun and playful, but the shape is polished and conservative.
You can’t beat a sleeveless mock neck dress in a satin fabric like this for a fall wedding. This version comes in a ton of colors but I’m really drawn to the black for a chic, timeless look. It’s under $100!
Good question. I spent a few hours scouring the internet to find the best wedding guest dresses and I had the most success at these places:
The kind of dress you’d wear to a September wedding fully depends on where the wedding is. If it’s outdoors at the beach in North Carolina, you can get away with a much more summery look than if you were attending a wedding in Colorado or Chicago in September. The attire of the wedding is also a deciding factor. If the wedding is formal or black tie, I would wear a floor length gown and choose the color based on the location. In the mountains I might wear an emerald green or darker blue, and on the coast I would opt for a more muted pink or light blue. The location and attire of the wedding you’re attending will be the deciding factors.
In general, however, I would opt for something that feels more summery than fall for September (and probably stay away from long sleeves since it’ll still be hot). Since summer doesn’t officially end until the very end of September, brighter hues and lighter fabrics are totally acceptable.
Again, this depends on where your wedding is! But as a rule of thumb, darker hues such as emerald green, navy, cobalt blue, black, red, purple, and brown are all great options. Think darker, bolder, and more “cool” tones versus bright, light, and warm.
Absolutely. Black is totally appropriate for a fall wedding and a very popular choice (especially for formal or black tie weddings).
Of course. One of my favorite picks from this blog post is the navy floral dress (very top of the post) that I’d wear to a wedding in a heartbeat.
