There are a lot of fruit and veggie supplements hitting the market these days but there is one I’ve taken for over 20 years: Balance of Nature. While this post isn’t sponsored, it’s a brand I wholeheartedly believe in and trust. I RARELY recommend supplements (or share what I take, for that matter) since everyone’s needs are so different. But, these are ones I feel are a great fit for nearly everyone.

My entire family takes balance of nature supplements, including my parents, a brother with Crohn’s Disease, another brother with Type 1 Diabetes and Addison’s Disease, and another with Lupus. (Yes, my family won the genetic lottery.) Remember, it’s always best to check with your doctor before adding a supplement to your routine, but the nice thing about these is that they’re simply whole foods — just fruit and veggies!

Since I love the brand so much, I reached out to them to see if they could offer a promo code for you guys. They said yes and offered a very generous discount – 35% off! Use this link and code TERI for 35% off your purchase.

Balance of Nature Review

First, what are Balance of Nature products?

They have two products: the Fruit & Veggie Supplements and the Fiber & Spice.

The Fruit and Veggies are simple — 100% produce! Balance of Nature Fruit and Veggies contain only flash dried fruits and vegetables, cold vacuumed so all of the water is removed but all the nutrients are kept. The little green and red pill capsules are simply filled with powder made from vine-ripened fruits and vegetables. Those fruits and veggies are always tested to ensure they’re pure with NO pesticides. And there are never additional additives or fillers or extracts. Ever. Just clean and pure nutrition.

I wouldn’t recommend you take them in place of eating whole fruits and veggies since you need the fiber and bulk that comes from those. But, it’s like a nice dietary “insurance policy” to help increase the nutrients in your diet and your overall health. But get this: Balance of Nature dietary supplements have over ten servings of fruits and vegetables daily. TEN!

Balance of Nature is based out of Utah (which is where I’m from!) and it’s been around since 1997. It’s third party tested, developed by a medical doctor, and free of added sugars, pesticides, and additives.

Here are the Balance of Nature Ingredients (and yes, they are all non-GMO and gluten-free!)
The Fruit capsules contain:
  • Aloe Vera
  • Apple
  • Banana
  • Blueberry
  • Cherry
  • Cranberry
  • Grape
  • Grapefruit
  • Lemon
  • Mango
  • Orange
  • Papaya
  • Pineapple
  • Raspberry
  • Strawberry
  • Tomato
The Balance of Nature Veggies capsules contain:
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrot
  • Cauliflower
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Celery Stalk
  • Garlic
  • Kale
  • Onion
  • Shiitake Mushroom
  • Soy Bean
  • Spinach
  • Wheat Grass
  • Yam
  • Zucchini

Could I eat that variety of fruits and veggies every day or even every week? I guess, maybe, in theory, I could. But that ain’t happening, in reality. So the variety of nutrients is a great addition to my daily, healthy diet!

I really appreciate that I know EXACTLY what’s in these supplements, since many supplements are made up of proprietary blends, which makes it hard to know what’s really in them.

Another thing I LOVE about the Veggie Capsules is that you can use them to get rid of a cold. I pop open the capsule and mix the contents with hot water. This makes a broth-y drink (that doesn’t taste amazing. Actually it’s pretty potent, haha) but it WORKS. It’s the best thing ever when I start to feel a little under the weather.

Here are a few snaps of the nutrition labels.

How many capsules do you take? And how do you take them?

The recommendation is to take 3 capsules of each daily. But when I’m sick, I’ll typically double the dose of each. A bottle contains 90 capsules, a 30 day supply. And guess what, they have a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you could try the entire bottle before committing if you really wanted to. I love them so much that I have a monthly subscription.

To take them, you have a few options:

  • Take them like a vitamin with water. This is what I do most days! I tend to take the green ones in the morning with breakfast and the pink ones in the afternoon.
  • Open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on a salad, in a smoothie, etc. (Note that the green ones do have a strong favor so tread cautiously with sprinkling on things!)
  • Chew the fruit ones! Sounds weird, but I actually really like it. It’s kind of like fruit leather.
  • Open the green ones and mix the powder with hot water for a healing tea. I LOVE doing this when I have a cold (which thankfully doesn’t happen often!). The cayenne adds a bit of a kick that helps my sinuses!

What’s in the Balance of Nature Fiber and Spice supplement?

It’s a psyllium supplement. And uh, let’s just say this really helped move things along during pregnancy! There’s a reason it was a pregnancy must-have for me. Psyllium is a type of fiber that helps regulate your bowels. Similar to other types of soluble fiber, psyllium moves through the small intestine without being completely broken down or absorbed. Instead, it absorbs water and becomes a gel-like substance to help with constipation and diarrhea (i.e. gut health). (Metamucil, which you may be familiar with, contains psyllium. But it also contains other ingredients I prefer to avoid.)

In addition to helping with your bowels, psyllium husk also helps lower harmful LDL cholesterol (which I do struggle with!) as well as two other lipid markers for heart disease (source). Some studies show it may help with irritable bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome (source), but work with your doctor since everyone’s IBS and IBD is a bit different. I have IBS and it helps me, but I have found a routine that works best (i.e. 1 scoop every third day). Some people are able to take the recommended serving of two scoops daily.

Balance of Nature Fiber & Spice also contains spices to deliver potent phytonutrition. And, those help give it an apple cider like flavor!

Fiber & Spice contains:
  • Whole Psyllium Husk
  • Flax Seed
  • Whole Apple
  • Allspice
  • Cardamom
  • Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Coriander
  • Cumin
  • Fennel Seed
  • Fenugreek
  • Ginger
  • Mustard
  • Nutmeg
  • Turmeric

Given the spiced cider flavor, it works well to mix with almond milk or apple juice or take on its own with water. Keep in mind that it absorbs water, so it forms a gel-like texture. If that weirds you out, mix it into a smoothie. I like to mix it with hot water and drink it quickly. My dad, on the other hand, likes to mix it with cold juice and let it sit for a few minutes before drinking. But, always make sure you take it with enough liquid so it works properly! I take it at night and my dad takes it in the morning. Try a few ways and see what you prefer.

Balance of Nature Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Wide variety of fruits and veggies in each serving
  • Easy to take in pill form vs. other powdered supplements which can be a pretty potent taste (I’ve tried others and gagged!)
  • Reputable and long-standing company. They’ve been around since 1997, long before it became trendy to drink your greens.
  • Subscription service available so you don’t forget to re-order. I love this service since mom brain is real. I have my probiotics, CBD products, and postnatal vitamins both set up to automatically send refills after 30 days as well.
Cons
  • You can only buy their products online. I actually love this since it’s one less thing to deal with. And since they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, you don’t need to over think it.
  • The green ones give a little bit of a grassy aftertaste, but that may be just me since my prenatal and postnatal vitamins do that too!

Is Balance of Nature good for seniors?

Yes! Both my parents take it and while they do their best to take care of themselves in other ways, this is a great way to help support health. My mom is 75 years old and does Crossfit multiple times a week and has a 450 day (and counting!) run streak. And hey, whatever she does, I’m on board with, because that’s amazing!

My dad is in his 80s and his doctors have commented specifically on how his colon health has improved over the years (from his regular colonoscopies) since he started taking the Fiber & Spice.

You can hear what else my parents had to say about Balance of Nature here!

Is Balance of Nature safe for kids?

Always check with your pediatrician if you have specific health concerns for your kiddos. But, in general, yes the fruit and veggie supplements are safe. I plan to give the fruit & veggie supplements to Thomas when he’s older. I’ll likely mix them into his meals. However, I’ll hold off on giving him Fiber and Spice. That’s best for adults as needed. Psyllium supplements should only be given to kids under a doctor’s supervision.

Bottom Line

Do I recommend Balance of Nature? 100% yes. I LOVE the supplements and I trust the brand. I feel energized and my digestion/gut health seems to be on track when I take these, although those things can also be contributed to other healthy habits. Balance of Nature is a Utah-based company and I always like supporting businesses from my home state. Plus, I know the founder, Doug Howard, personally and I know the work he has put in for years to ensure a quality product. He put so much care and effort into sourcing the best ingredients. He spent years learning about phytonutrients, or phytochemicals, which are compounds a plant develops to stay healthy and prevent damage. Balance of Nature provides Health Coaching Services at no additional charge, which I think is great.

I’ll add a note here that Balance of Nature is not FDA approved. Since it’s a dietary supplement, it’s not subject to FDA approval. Only pharmaceutical medications and medical devices are subject to Food and Drug Administration approval.

    1. Well, I tried the coupon code but it turns out that it’s only on the recurring orders; and they charge a fee to set that up, so basically the coupon winds up covering the cost of the set-up fee and not the product. You might want to change your blog to point out that the discount is not off the product if you only want to order one to try it.

      • Elaine, this is true…I found that out myself. You can cancel your order if you don’t like it before you are charged again. I know that is an annoyance, but using the code, even with the one time charge, comes out WAY cheaper than ordering a one time supply. Just my two-cents.

    2. I have been taking Balance of Nature for over a year, and I must say that I have not been sick and have incredible energy that keeps me working 12 hours a day. I don’t know what else to attribute it to. I say it’s worth a try. It can’t be bad for you as it is fruits and veggies.

    3. This is more a question than a reply. Can Balance of Nature be taken with my other vitamins and supplements?
      Thank You

      • I don’t know of any contraindications since they’re simply fruits and vegetables, but I’d check with your health provider or doctor if you have specific concerns.

    4. Teri, does the code only take 35% off the first order, or every reoccurring order thereafter?

    5. I have a reaction to the capsules as recommended. My doctor suggests I take only one capsule from each bottle daily. How do I change my order to every 3 months?

    6. […] Consuming more fruits & vegetables is a good way to keep yourself fit and healthy. This contains vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Moreover, they are full of fiber and may even prevent heart disease. In addition, eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables can also help you feel better. Try to include more vegetables in your daily meals. A simple way to make this happen is to prepare fresh salads or stir-fries. If you’re considering taking a nutritional supplement to help fill out your diet you might consider Balance of nature. […]

    7. I will be 80 in March….I am desperately trying to find a food (fruit/veggie) supplement to enhance my eating habits and also to feel more energized. I am in good shape, usual aches and pains. I love to walk but I get tired and my legs bother me..I am trying to exercise my glutes (doctor recommended exercises)…I also have cost concerns….Would you support taking fewer capsules each day???? Your suggestions would be much appeciated.

    8. Taken Fruits & veggies for over 20 years & I feel great & seldom get sick.
      I’m SOLD !

    9. Hi, I am now taking Balance of Nature daily. I’ve been taking a number of vitamins every day for years, so just wondering if I still need to take them now that I’m taking B of N? I’d appreciate your help – Thanks!

    10. How many servings of fruit would be in 3 capsules daily?

    11. I take the fruit&veggie but have been hesitant about the fiber due to addition of tumeric and one other. Also, can one sprinkle it on hot cereal instead of drinking it (yuck).

    12. I have been dealing with crohns and take remixade infusions. Can balance of nature help with crohns?

      • My brother has Crohns and takes it but I’d recommend that you talk to your doctor as every situation is different!
