It’s no secret that I’m not winter’s biggest fan…mostly because it always seems to drag on. The whole "winter is coming" things lasts about two seconds, and then BAM it’s here, and then it’s "WINTER IS NEVER EVER ENDING." Okay, maybe I’m being a bit dramatic. I just prefer spring or summer or fall…or an unusually warm winter. 😉 I miss the long days of summer and the perfect temperatures of spring and fall for being outside for any and all reasons.
But, the one thing I’ll give winter kudos for is getting me to switch up my workout, which is really important for avoiding injuries and mental burnout.
I don’t feel like running quite as much in the colder months (I typically use it for switching to maintenance mode in my training) and my body tends to crave workouts that are (a) indoors and (b) strengthen and lengthen out my muscles, i.e. Pure Barre and yoga, whether with a self-guided practice (here’s how I do hot yoga at home!) or in the studio.
This is NOT hot yoga. 😉
I also treat myself to a piece or two of new workout clothing in the winter months to help keep me motivated – and Target® C9 has plenty of affordable options. I used to be in the camp of "I don’t’ match when I work out and I take pride in that!"… but I’ve learned after finally acquiring more workout clothes that are cute and – gasp! – match how nice it use to feel presentable when working out. It really helps motivate me.
I feel like I become a more well-rounded athlete in the winter months as I gain more strength and flexibility in often-neglected areas, and that makes me a stronger runner during the rest of the year as I ramp up my mileage. So…I guess you’re alright winter.
What’s your favorite winter workout?

i think my favorite winter workout has gotta be anything i can do in the comfort of my own home…. so basically strength training or yoga. biking and rowing require a drive to the gym (albeit 5 min)… which means i will be in the cold for at least a few seconds. now if i could just stay home… oh wait!
🙂
I’m with you Eva! Because it gets dark early and because I’m a big complainypants, I stick to working out at home. I converted half of my garage to a weight room and I have a professional spin bike in the house. The only downside is how cold the weights are in the morning. Like I said, big complainypants 🙂
I love Target workout gear!!
When I lived in the northeast, my favorite winter workout was ice skating. Indoor rinks are more common there than they are here in Florida. I could usually find an open skate time with few people there. The only ice rink we have here is a makeshift one set up around the holidays and it’s packed with families and kids. The ice is always chewed up 🙁
Ice skating is such a great workout and I miss it. Another fun indoor option in larger cities is a trampoline park. Jumping for simply a 1/2 hour will wear you out!
Happy New Year to you 🙂
I am a weirdo and LOVE running in the cold! Maybe I’m just making up for lost time having grown up in florida but this is my favorite time to run!
I just started a nutrition challenge… I think I’ll reward myself at the end with some new workout gear 🙂
My favorite winter workout gear is Hot Hands hand warmers I can put in my gloves. I live outside of Atlanta so our temps are similar to yours. Glad to hear I am not the only one who likes to give my body a small break from constant running in the cold months. My back gets very achy in the colder weather so also use this time to focus on other forms of fitness. I am trying Barre3 DVD today for something new.
Spin and Boot Camp
Charlotte just got Class Pass, so it’s giving me the chance to try a few different indoor workout options (I’m usually a big hot yoga’er with a bit of side running). I went to my first Pure Barre class last week and it was so much fun, and also hard!!! I’m also happy my favorite yoga studio in Charlotte, Yoga One, is the perfect cure for a chilly day. 🙂
My favorite workout is Jillian Michaels (30 Day Shred or Ripped in 30 NOT her Yoga Meltdown, that shiz is the worst!). The different levels work out slightly different muscles, although I suspect they each work out *a lot* of muscles….and it can all be done without leaving my house!
