Balancing Productivity with Laziness

post featured image

Happy Sunday! Not sure about you guys, but I’m currently focusing all my energy on expending as little energy as possible. 🙂 It is so dang hot and humid today. Which was unfortunate for my run since I didn’t get out until 10:30. I was up late again last night and then couldn’t fall asleep so I got out of bed late, which made for a very late start to my run. I was planning to run 10 miles today, but the heat and the humidity definitely wouldn’t allow for that. I ran 5 miles and called it good! I was a sweaty mess by the end.

Considering the conditions, I felt really good about my run–5 miles in 36:24 with some strong splits.

mile 1 – 8:05
mile 2 – 7:11
mile 3 – 6:53
mile 4 – 7:13
mile 5 – 7:02

I still get absolutely giddy when I see my pace in the 6’s. Three years ago, I NEVER EVER EVER thought I would run in the 7s, let alone 6s and 5s. I was a 9-11 minute miler and thought I always would be. It really is so amazing how the body adapts and changes as you push it. I was thinking about that on Friday too when lifting weights and realizing how quickly my body has responded to that. I’m so so grateful for my health and strong body and try to never take it for granted.

I had a perfect balance of productivity and laziness yesterday. I cleaned for three hours. THREE HOURS PEOPLE. Vacuumed, mopped, scrubbed bathrooms, wiped baseboards, wiped down cabinets and doors. I was a machine. Then I sat my butt on the couch for three hours and finished season two of house of cards. I didn’t even get out of my PJs until like 4:00. 🙂 I finally went to the store to get some taco toppings for dinner (I had put pineapple salsa chicken in the crockpot earlier in the day) and picked up some gluten-free Omission beer. I topped the tacos with red onion, avocado and lettuce. Simple but so good.

After dinner, I  took pup on a long walk once the temperatures dropped a little. Between cleaning and walking the pup, I was perfectly content with not working out yesterday.

Oh! I also did a little office redecorating yesterday. I had some race poster tacked up and my race bibs above my desk before, but I got this year’s Cherry Blossom 10 Miler race poster framed because I loved it so much, and hung it up above my desk. Love it! I also put a little basket in the corner for my gym bag, purse, etc. rather than having them just sitting on and around the desk all the time. I’m slowly getting more organized and neat as I get older. 🙂 (You are reading that correctly Mom! Tell Dad too!)

OK, this is long already so I’m gonna post this and then work on the Weekender post to post later. I have a gazillion links for you since I haven’t posted a Weekender in forever.

Are you neat/organized or cluttered/messy? Fess up! I have always been super messy and cluttered. My dad used to walk into my room growing up and asked if anyone got hurt in the tornado. hahaha. I’m super organized and efficient with tasks and getting things done (I’m an obsessive user of to-do lists/calendars/planners), but I used to always leave things around my desk and house. Now I find that clutter drives me nuts and I’m working on getting things organized so everything has a place. 🙂 And it feels GOOD.

    1. I’m so glad I’m not the only one struggling with long runs in this heat and humidity. I live outside of Atlanta, GA. I stayed out way too late Fri night and didn’t start my long run until 9am Sat morning. Goal on way to my run, 12 miles, after 2 miles into my run I changed my goal to 10 miles, by mile 7, I was happy with 8 total. Called it a day and went to the lake with the family after. As for House of Cards…LOVE It. Can’t wait for Season 3.

    2. I have been doing the same thing today! I went to the gym and ran some errands then came home and cleaned for a few hours and now I am NOT moving from my couch…at least until I get hungry 😉 I am clean deep down inside but it doesn’t show on the outside yet. I love things clean I just have a heck of a time keeping them that way. Then when I do start cleaning I go nuts and clean all day long!

    3. I’m exactly like you–very organized at work and with certain things in life, but overall I leave a mess and piles of papers everywhere I go. I’m also trying to get better about cleaning things out and organizing around my house, especially for my husband’s sake.

    4. Scott makes our furniture and everything has to have drawers since we can never have enough. And if we want to be messy—it is all hidden?

How in the world did you go from 9-10 minute miles to 7ish? I know I am alot older than you (I’m 46), but would love to get into the 8s.

    5. I’d love to see those splits someday. Like others commented, how did you teach your body to adapt? I’ve been stuck in the 9-10 min/mi zone for so long.

    6. This post is truly motivational for me. I struggle so much with running and have let myself get comfortable with running 10, 11, and even 12 minute miles and just saying that i’ll never get faster so why not just stay with those times. But this post has shown me that with the effort I can get faster! Thanks!

    7. I want to be organized but I’m so messy!!! I need to come up with an organization system that I can stick to. Any suggestions?!
